Gel toothpaste or the white stuff?

Asked by charliecompany34 (7813points) January 2nd, 2009

i don’t know what it is about gel toothpastes. for some reason, whether it’s blue or red, i feel a good white toothpaste product leaves my teeth and breath cleaner and fresher.

fave white toothpaste is a mixture of peroxide and a citrus splash that borders on orange and cream. it’s a fresh clean taste that says “aaaaahhhhhhhh!”

just don’t get that from gel. do you?

I think the gel toothpaste is cool. My favorite is the one with baking soda——I use that one. I absolutely hate toothpaste that isn’t mint like ’ ee bubblegum delight for ee little kids joy!’ yuck! Not what I want in my mouth when I sleep.

[edit]: I hate cinnamon, too.

I loved the taste of red colgate, but I don’t think it cleaned as well as the white stuff. Now I just use whatever SO buys; I frankly don’t even know what brand it is, but it’s part gel, part white. I think

@knotmyday: i know that toothpaste. guess it satisfies both tastes. wow, what if we came up with food-flavored toothpastes? like pizza-basil-mint? hmmmm…

Right now I am using Crest cool blue gel. I miss Pearl Drops spearmint. I tasted great and my teeth feel so smooth and clean!!

I’m getting sick, charlie.

It is a good thing that you are brushing your teeth, because I hate when people don’t and their teeth turn yellow-brown. I must brush my teeth before and after I sleep. But my teeth are all messed up, and I don’t know why.

The white stuff is the best to use (when you lack spackle) and you need to patch the nail holes in your walls to get your deposit back. I guess that’s one way it prevents cavities.

I honestly don’t care what kind of toothpaste I use. As long as it’s tastes okay and makes my teeth feel squeaky clean, I’m happy.

Here at casa gimme we use the paste with the ribbon of gel running through it. This formula provides the perfect balance between that which is too pasty and that which is too gelatinous. When I’ve noticed that the little gimmies have been slacking in the tooth maintenance department, I’ll have them brush with baking soda. They are normally pretty diligent!!

I use Pepsodent. (The white stuff.)

I like Crest Cinnamon Burst. I like the taste of it & I think it cleans just fine. I can’t stand a toothpaste with those little bead things in it.

Aquafresh extreme clean! Has both! And is EXTREME.

with gel toothpastes, i get this acidy chalky starchy taste on the back of my mouth on the tongue that after about 30 minutes feels like pasty “saran” wrap with a peppery garnish that can only be rinsed with a cold glass of water. and you still taste it even after that.

i just hate gel toothpaste. something is in it that annoys me.

The gel stuff doesn’t clean your mouth as well, and it doesn’t make your breath smell as good. The white stuff is better at clearing plaque and leaves your breath with a fresh scent.

Gel toothpaste has a weird texture that I’m not accustomed to.

I’ve been using Crest Pro-Health Whitening. I work at CVS, so I can get the stuff cheap.

Some people don’t like Crest Pro-Health because it seems more gritty than normal toothpaste, but I feel like it cleans better.

Over use of extremely abrasive pastes can start to wear away your enamel.

shadling21's avatar

@Curious: Could that actually happen, using toothpaste twice a day?

mangeons's avatar

I like using Colgate Total with Whitening.

I use whatever Crest product is on sale or whatever “I gotta have that” brand that my kids realize they can’t stand after the first time they use it. Gel or paste, it pretty much does the trick. At least that’s what my dentist says, since I never have really bad plaque build-up.

@Shadling21: Yes it can! Sorry, I’m on an iPhone and can’t paste a link, but google “over abrasive toothpaste enamel damage”. Several helpful sites come up.

I learned about this from my dentist who recommended I not use Arm and Hammer whitening toothpaste as it’s too abrasive for everyday use. He said if I just have to use it, use no more than one tube a year.

my toothpaste is Colgate Total with whitening, for the record.
