What are the Fluther "customs" that older users keep referring to?
I’ve read two topics where older Fluther members complain about the newbies. They often refer to understanding Fluther “customs” that newbies apparently don’t get. Just what are these customs? Explain them to us newbies so we don’t keep offending the Fluther collective. I’ve read the Fluther guidelines, and aside from atrocious misspellings; text speak; open-ended questions (which I actually see a lot of); I don’t see any other restrictions. I thought the point of Fluther was to tap into the expertise of others. So why can’t a person ask a question they could easily Google? What if they’re asking because they want someone’s expertise and they want to avoid the dozens of pages of links in Google that lead them nowhere? Isn’t the point to be able to ask? If not, then clue us in on these unwritten customs we’re so obviously missing.

Do as you wish suzy, take no heed from the “old school”,they tend to close ranks.
There is this unwritten rule that you must tow the line“because we all had to attitude”.
If you piss someone off,so what? It’s really rather trivial to say the least.
Stuff the rank and file and ask and post what you wish when you wish.
I for one welcome you and all “newbies”.
The regular users will pour scorn on this post by me,however you already know what i say is true as you are experiencing what i am.
Furthermore take no notice of the score at the side of each avatar because that means that you sit on your PC a lot longer than most.
It does not mean that they are any better or worse than you,you do not have to show some misguided respect because they have 12,000,000 points. So dont get pushed out or conform, just be YOU.
Don’t annoy the crap out of older jellies. I am a newbie and I sometimes do so yeah. :)
The google questions that piss me off are asking for facts not opinions. (Ie “What is the capital of Alaska?”) I know that some topics are hard to google, but fact based questions can usually be typed into google almost verbatim and get an answer.
I also get annoyed when people are clearly trying to get someone to do their homework. It’s one thing if someone explains that they’ve tried all these options, cant figure it out and need some advice on what direction to go in next. But it’s another thing entirely to ask a homework question without doing any kind of work.
I will admit I get cranky sometimes and just tell people to google things. Mostly I get annoyed because these “older users” that everyone refers to are still newbies to me. They came in the first iPhone wave and they’re the ones that drove me away from the site for awhile.
It’s like I said in another post about new users. I don’t judge based on your score or your join date. If you’re obnoxious or continually ask dumb questions, I’m not going to like you.
When I first came here, I was afraid to say ANYTHING. I just read for a while. I could see that there was a ‘group’ here & I was afraid to chime in. I was finally able to tell the funny ones, the snarky ones & the sincere ones. I reconnected with a friend who I’d lost track of over on AV & I’m happy about that.
This is a good post, Perchik. It’s food for thought.
Oasis, stop changing your avatar! You’re driving me nuts! And don’t call him ‘kid’. Right, Alex? ;-)
When I first came I asked a question that had just recently been asked and I could tell it annoyed some by their comments. Since then I’ve learned to search first before I ask because it might have been just asked and I didn’t see it. I can understand how that can be frustrating, but wrong spelling/grammar, who cares. I’m not an English major, so give me a break, plus there are people on fluther learning English so we shouldn’t be so quick to drag them down. Besides, my iPhone is constantly correcting my spelling and sometimes it gets it wrong. So people need to be less anal about these things.
The spelling/grammar IS an issue. Regardless of how smart you are, excessive bad spelling/grammar makes you sound like an idiot. It’s much harder to give a good answer to someone who sounds stupid.
It’s usually easy to tell who’s learning english from the people who have spoken english all of their lives. They make different spelling/grammar mistakes. I think it’s fairly obvious and I haven’t really seen any blatant attacks on people I assume are learning English.
I agree that it’s a bit harsh to jump on people for every little grammar mistake- everyone makes typos and formal grammar on the internet is strange sometimes. However, I don’t see that as an excuse to just go crazy and not care.
Proper spelling, grammar, etc are a Fluther custom, if not a rule. I don’t think we attack people for a simple error (we all make them), but obvious lack of care with the language does annoy many here. Non-native speakers (writers?) get a pass.
No matter how long someone has been using fluther, or how much Lurve someone has, everyone has their pet peeves: grammar, spelling, googable questions, iPhone users, etc.
Just don’t take it personally. Everyone has control issues.
I have no control issues.I do not wish to mould anyone to fit.
If all you have to worry about is the presentation of someones post or question may i suggest a reality check.
Is it some self gratification thing,to highlight a small hiccup? Maybe to impress your peers?
I think the grammar corrections are annoying if they are for an single obvious typo…in contrast, text speak is irritating…..
but the whole frizzer question was just darn funny <<can’t find it….sorry :(
@suzyq Don’t sweat it too much…you will figure out soon enough who to avoid and who to engage, who can take a joke and who is touchy…..just give it some time to find your groove.
Welcome to Fluther :)
What is the capital of Alaska?
….A single obvious typo…. (^^^^^)
totally unintentional….ya’ see what I’m talkin’ about ?! Sigh.
@oasis: “I have no control issues.I do not wish to mould anyone to fit.” Bullshit. You want everyone to be nice about other people’s sloppiness and bad manners. Be a man
(if you are one; sorry, I don’t know or care). Admit you want to be King. We all do. But we share.
p.s. “mold”.
mmmh, touchy, maybe if some people give others the chance to get in,without jumping on them with both feet.
Telling them in no uncertain terms that what they do is not acceptable is not the way to treat a newbie.
Please understand that these people have no support from the rank and file and i will wager that quite a few do not hang around due to the aloof attitude diplayed by you and the rank and file. However there are those who stand and question peoples intimidation methods.
The odd typo is one thing, but spelling/grammar that is so bad as to make the question or comments exceedingly difficult to interpret is another. I haven’t seen many “older” Flutherers jump on the former, but empathize with those I’ve seen criticizing the latter.
As for any other “customs”, I’m not sure what those might be.
@oasis:
I have solidarity with people who are new to a situation and don’t know the
traditions. But that’s why we go to new places – to learn how they work.
So, learn already. Put in a little more time. Asking questions is great. Ask them in a friendly way and you’ll get a plethora of friendly answers. and I want lurve for the word “plethora”
Not everything is guided by “rules”. Conventions develop over time and depend on the personalities of the people who stick around.
Shitting on existing conventions and being angry because no one wrote them down
is a waste of energy. Relax. Enjoy. Examine. All will be revealed in the fullness of time. You’re grand. Have a good time. Happy fucking New Year.
I don’t expect other fluther users to abide by any rules other than the published guidelines – what I do find annoying though, is the occasional outcry for sympathy or thinly veiled ‘public’ confrontations in the form of ‘so-and-so-is-picking-on-me’ questions…..if there’s an issue, confront the person the issue is with or if it’s severe enough, contact the mods!
