Flickr vs Facebook?

Asked by BronxLens (1539points) January 4th, 2009

What are the pros and cons of showing some of my body of work in Facebook over Flickr. I realize that idealy one would have a dedicated site to display one’s work, but give me the benefit of your insight for the posed question.

Facebook=people may stock you but do it anyway.
Flickr= photos without getting stalked.

If all you care about is photo sharing, Flickr is the way to go. Facebook is as 90s kid says: for stalking people.

I think it depends on what type of pictures you have. For instance, if you take a lot of people pictures, Facebook is better because you can tag the people and this increase the chances of others seeing it and this comment on it. But if your shots are more artistic, Flickr might serve you more because it has a huge community as well as all the features the site offers (presized photos, etc), and honestly Facebook peeps aren’t really interested in looking at artsy photos, they’re more interested in drunken photos.

If you choose to use facebook your can comment on your work, you can show off to people you know but professionally it’s not so good. Flickr photos can be browsed by anyone, which sets you ahead professionally, but any acquaintances that want to comment are going to have to have a flickr account.

If you don’t have a facebook , (and don’t have friends on there) then uploading pictures there would probably be a bad idea.

“If you choose to use facebook your can comment on your work,”

You can comment on your work on Flickr as well. You can even do fancy little notes overlaying the pictures.

Er I made a typo. That was supposed to be “your friends can comment on your work.”

If it’s a proper portfolio type of stuff, Flickr ftw.

I stopped posting my photos to facebook about a year ago. There, your friends probably don’t understand that your photos are your artwork. I had a friend who told me after her presentation that my pictures helped her Spanish project. I would have had no problem with it if she had asked to use my work. I probably overreacted, but I felt as if she had stolen my work. And I never would have known, had she not told me.

On Flickr, most members of the community are also posting their artwork and understand creative commons and proper etiquette that comes with using images posted by others.

If I want my facebook friends to see the pictures I post, I’ll update my status with a link to the newest flickr updates.

Flickr is best for general presenting of photos to friends/the world and for the groups feature.
Facebook is good with it’s people tagging.

Flickr +
Pros: You can make some pictures private or viewable by only people you allow while sharing the rest with the world
You can join groups to share photos people of similar interests
Plenty of ways to sort or present your photos, You can Geo tag them, lots of 3rd party apps and websites that can use flickr feeds
Can download original quality hi-res photos (if you have a pro account)
Cons: You have to pay for a Pro account to upload your images in their original quality and to not be limited on how much you can upload at a time.
Plenty of porn/pervy stuff on there if your careful you can stumble on (although it’s policed pretty well)

Facebook:
Pros: People tagging in photos
Friends automatically see when you’ve added new photos
Cons: Stalker heaven
slow loading an plenty of timeouts
No options in layout or presentation of gallery.
