What game(s) holds the record above all others for holding your attention span the longest?

For me it was Diablo 2 and Planetside, but the big winner was WoW. Played that for 3 years before I finally broke away.
Now all I play are random casual games online, oh, and feed my Rock Band addiction.

Halo 3 probably.
I didn’t buy another game for like a year, and when I did, I just completed it in like a day and went back to Halo :)
Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge. Used to mod that game for years.
@vinifera7 LURVE!!! RA2 Yuris Revenge is by far the best RTS game ever. As well as my all time favorite game.
i think i need to go play now…..
Armageddon is here.
Tetris! I can’t tell you how many hours of my life I have lost playing that darn game but my scores were in the millions if that’s any indication.
Now I wanna go play Tetris…
Is fluther is considered a game, Fluther.
Most things in the Zelda series keep me engrossed until I beat them.
F.E.A.R.. was pretty addicting.
Original Warcraft. Heroes of Might and Magic III. Starcraft. Chrono Trigger. FFVII.
I play all these even now, since they were released.
And WoW.
WoW, the first Pokemon gameboy game and Final Fantasy VII.
I think that are the games I played the longest.
But I guess that’s pretty normal since their gameplay is aimed at long play.
Another game I played a lot is Nox, It doesn’t have a story as long as the former games, but you can choose between three classes whose gameplay differ greatly, so i guess you should count the gameplay*3.
Yeah, Nox was fun, but I got a lot more mileage out of Diablo II. Diablo II is addicting for no good reason. Even now I want to play it.
i dont even want to talk about how many hours i had logged on Pokemon Blue….
I think there’s something subliminal built into Pokemon games that makes them addicting.
Example: Pokemon Snap. Horrible game. I beat it. Just plain sad. Sad I tell you.
hmm Starcraft, eve online, and possibly civilization IV
Counterstrike.
And in terms of a single sitting, Civilization.
@andrew: Counterstrike? Fail. Civ? Win.
@asmonet: I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you from all that questing going on.
Lingerie football would hold my attentoon for a while. I have never played any of the above mentioned games. Seems like a massive waste of time with absolutely nothing accomplished.
To each his own then Cardinal, I guess. :)
<—-hates when people call video games a waste of time.
“Time you enjoyed wasting is not wasted time.”
Does Hungry Hungry Hippos count? The question didnt specify video games. Yes Hungry Hungry Hippos holds my attention very long time.
Some people consider video games a waste of time.
Some people consider reading books a waste of time.
Some people consider the internet, family, school, work, and people a waste of time.
Some people consider life a waste of time.
To paraphrase asmonet, to each their own.
+1 star for j00
@Buster, when you mentioned hours playing Tetris… reminded me of all the hours playing Minesweeper. And even more than that – Spider Solitaire. Ugh.
But for more quality games, I second the Civilization nomination. Oh, and Sims2 had me doing 12-hour days over winter break last year.
Elite: Frontier II on the Amiga. Played it every single day for 7 (yes, that is SEVEN) years. Never got tired of it. Then I bought a PC and got some games on that for a bit. And generally didn’t play much. Then I found a version of FE2 for the PC and played it there for yet another couple of years (though not as fanatically).
All the Might&Magics have also been addictive, including HoMM3 that asmonet mentioned. It’s what I’m playing at the moment :)
I also loved Gothic1&2 but never got 3 to play properly. That was yet another year of my life in front of a monitor…
I don’t know if you have heard of this game, but it’s so open-ended that you could never really get bored of it. There was no “end”, and practically infinite star systems to explore. The amazing thing is that the file was like 64kb or something. As you can imagine, after 7 years I got so good that I could land manually on stars or gas giants (I’ve never even heard of anyone making a successful land on normal planets) and even once managed to destroy the entire Imperial fleet while unarmed. And managed to find the legendary Mirage ship (though you can’t buy it). There was always a new challenge one could find, a new test that you could decide to set yourself. I’d still play that game right now actually if I had a PC that could run DOS.
@Jack: I looked up Frontier 2 (never heard of it) and it looks like the developers at Spore played that game too. At least for the space stage portion or their development.
Nice
I also play a lot of American McGee’s Alice. Um.. I’m gonna go kill some crap with a pack of cards now. :D
Great game asmonet! Man i havent played that in forever, i used to play the hell outta that game. I think im going to have to go dig that up.
:) Mininova has a fantastic copy. Just sayin’. Not that I condone that sort of behavior…or even know how good of a copy it is..I stop now.
What is Alice like? I thought it was an adventure game, is it?
3rd person adventure platformer. Heres a clip of some funny sounding dude playing.
ohhh noo lava fish!
@uber: Haha, that dude’s narrative is epic. “Good job Alice, I’m proud of you!”
I just finished that level. Haha. Win.
sims 2. oh man.
and galaga! is that how you spell it? over spring break i went to orlando with a few of my best friends and we befriended the guy at the front desk at like 3am. he gave us free run of the arcade and a box of arcade-coins to waste. i was nearly in tears trying to beat my high score on that goddamned game.
