It makes beeping and clicking noises randomly. It sounds like it’s coming from a program I’m running, but I’ve been told that it could be problems with the hard drive. Any ideas?

It’s probably the hard drive. It’s the piece you can hear. When you’re running a program that accesses a scratch drive (photoshop, etc) or running something where you need to read a lot of info off the hard drive does it click more then when you’re just sitting at idle?
If so, I’d say the hard drive.
Another vote for hard drive, my WD External HD makes robot noises all the time. I think it’s becoming sentient.
It does make more noises with bigger programs. But it makes the noises randomly throughout the day too. I was told that this could be a sign that m hard drive is about to crash. Is this true?
It depends on the noises, grating, excessive ‘whirring’ things like that, yes. But if it’s just a few clicks and spins, no big deal. I think it’s one of those things that the more familiar you are with computers the easier it is to tell right off the bat.
If you’re worried, back up your files and then if you fel it’s necessary, take it in to a store to get checked.
I think you should take a backup and get to your closest reseller ASAP!
Clicking noises from the hard drive is usually not a good thing.
Maybe it’s the money you would save by switching to Geico?
Thanks for the advice. I’ll take it into the Apple store tomorrow.
Boot from the DVD that came with the computer—Insert the DVD, reboot, and hold down the C key. If the noises do not appear while booted to the clean OS on the DVD, you have traced the problem to software running on your internal drive. If the noises are present, it’s probably a hardware issue.
Hey zack, some hard drives just click. I’ve got some old computers that click like two tiny men are playing craps with rusty dice constantly. I wouldn’t worry about it as long as you’re backing up all your important information (like you should always do).
