How do you feel about your Fluther user-name being altered?

When the answers are flying fast & sometimes furious, names are hard to keep up with. Some have names that are very long, hard to type, or are just odd. It seems some are almost always shortened (gail, knot, uber). How do you feel about people shortening your name, using initials or even giving you a Fluther nick-name?
If you do mind, why do you mind?

I don’t mind.
Mine doesn’t really need shortening.
Fine with me. It’s more important to me that someone is interested in what I have to say.
Personally I respect the name the person chooses to go by. Now that I use an iPod touch to interact with this site though, I can understand why some abbreviate. At first I cared but nowadays I don’t really care what I’m called as long as it’s something nice :)
I’ve come to really like “TL.”
Oh dear, I had better monitor this thread so I can avoid giving offense to anyone who does mind. I am definitely guilty of shortening. I usually don’t do it if it is a poster I don’t know very well. I think for me, it is a sign of affection or respect.
Most people don’t shorten mine (since it is relatively short). I have gotten the occasional Mar.
@by; (May I call you by?). It is true that some names are impossible to get correct without enlarging the font, using a magnifier or changing my glasses.
Call AC “Chucky” and see what he says.
I enjoy “RH”, “Richard”, or whatever. But if you call me “dick”, I’ll abuse you.
I know this is asking for trouble, but I don’t think people usually shorten my name. It’s short enough, aready.
@gail: I often shorten for exactly that reason, just ask shandling shadling! As yes, you can call me by, btb, bay…whatever!
AC, Astro, Chuckie, Stud, whatever. All are okay.
But I really want to be called Diane.
Dave; Better than Tacky, yes?
I was only joking by the way….
@BTB Someone called me Snoppy once. I didn’t know if it was a typo or an insult. LOL.
I have been scolded for shortening someone’s name. I think it is kinda like choosing kids names. If you don’t want it shortened, pick a name that is A) easy to read/discern and b)isn’t easily shortened…...or better still….don’t be so uptight.
And stop choosing alphanumeric names that include odd and scattered punctuation.
I’m okay with tiny; though tinyfaery isn’t long or complicated.
I have said before that if I had realized my name would actually be used/typed so often while here on Fluther, I would have chosen a much shorter name.
@snoopy: snoppy is better than snotty!
I’m most often wilhel, no one bothers to spell out the 1812 part
Mine is pretty short as it is, and is kind of hard to shorten… but if people manage, they get kudos, and hey, it may catch.
@RichardHenry- What if I like abuse?
@BS <<<<<so this is OK, then :) ?
Those are my initials, so sure, Why not?
Believe me, growing up with those initials wasn’t very easy
@BSilver….LOL I have a friend w/ the same initials. Good for you!
I’ve been called gail several times but I take that as a compliment because gailcalled is very respected. Also the name font is very tiny. My birth name is a less common variation so most people mispronounce it.
@Rob-I always thought that video was so strange, but I LOVE the song
Just don’t call me late for dinner.
People have been calling me Tali since I was born. I rather like the nickname.
I am totally fine with having my username shortened. On the other hand, I cannot stand it when people shorten my real-life name.
I know where you got this.
Well it’s best I don’t share my answer. Call me any form of 90s_kid or you can just call me Alex. Either one works for me.
I always laugh when people call me breed, since I’m gay.
Chop away! Call me anything but “that one.”
Oh yeah, and I like being called “Adam” too. That’s cuz it’s my name.
I don’t mind. If it’s between “shad” and ”shandling”, I’d pick “shad” any day.
@Pete: How about PottyBoyPete?
Judo, chop or JC or just J. I don’t care. Sticks and stones I say. Sticks and stones.
@Kayla: That’s a bit extreme. Let’s stick with Pete.
@(PottyBoy)Pete: WHOA. You remembered my name.
with a little help from Allie and PnL :)
whatevers clever.
anyone else find it funny rich saying hed abuse you if you called him dick :P hes so dirty sometimes…..
I second the bat. You could always just call me fool.
I actually started just using Cheeb as my username on other sites because I grew so fond of being called cheeb on here.
I will probably imagine you are lazy if you shorten my ‘nym.
@Z – I’m awfully lazy. How’d you know?
We kind of knew that, Shand.~
I don’t mind a bit, so long as I know it’s me you’re referring to. Some people cough, chuckie, cough even lengthen mine!
AuggieDoggie
Whoa! I’m seeing double, Auggie Doggie!
Whoa! I’m seeing double, Auggie Doggie!
Mine is pretty simple, most people leave the numbers off though. I don’t mind at all. It’s whavever tickles your pickle.
It does confuse me when people use real names because I can’t keep up with that. But life will go on.
I’m dreadfully lazy incredibly efficient and do this all time.
Naturally, it doesn’t bother me when others do it.
Though I suppose there’s only so much you can do with it.
Mine is short enough already and has never been shortened in a thread on this site before. In Campfire I’ve been called Alls, Al, and A.
I don’t mind… Lo, L, Hey you, whatever!
@Allie, in campfire I was goofy!
Call me Ishmael. (Or jan – don’t mind at all.)
@uber: Bend over and Remainder of comment removed by Fluther moderators.
@dick & @uber, get a room, you two. ツ
squirbel…. i’m pretty sure it’s unique enough that people like typing it…
plus it has a smooth keyboard-typing transition from letter to letter so it’s somewhat less difficult to type….
omg i sound hoity toity!
some have shortened it down to squirb… that’s cool.
I prefer to be shortened to EP or Pixie and don’t mind at all. It’s just easier on everyone.
As, Asmo, whatever as long as you use the first half. Because otherwise, it just looks weird.
I think that Monet is a lovely name.
But “Smone” would be out, right?
I think it still has to be recognizable. If someone starts saying “Smone”, I’m going to think they’ve made a typo while talking about S’mores. And I’ll be really confused as to where the desserts came from.
@ressP: Oh, come on. It’s not that confusing.
If I remember correctly, isn’t Simone## a chef?
s’mores == asmonet == yummy, indeed!
Step back from the s’mores. I repeat, step back from s’mores, and no one will get hurt!
I end up just as “Tits” sometimes, which is fine by me. It lends itself to quite a few lol’s. I’ll generally shorten if it’s a first name (ie: gailcalled because gail), but if it’s just some kind of word, I’ll type out most of it.
@gail yes simone54 is a chef. we used to cook at the same restaurant when he lived in jersey.
Yeah, I’m with Tits.
that never gets old
@uberbatman: I think that’s the best one I’ve seen!!!
Ooh, I like that better.
Fluther: We Lurve Tits
Tits is in my Fluther tapping my collective.
@richardhenry: I want to apologize for calling you dickhank in a previous thread. I meant it in the friendliest of ways.
I haven’t had a problem with that, considering my username is pretty short, but anything: M, mang, will do. As long as I know who you’re talking to. : ) But my favorite nickname is Tangy, so if you wanna shorten it, use that if you can.
But never call me mangy, or there will be some explaining to do…
How’d someone get Tangy from mangeons? (Mangoes.. tangerines.. maybe.. wtf?)
@allie i made it up, because for some reason, the word mangeons (we eat) reminds me of oranges, which are Tangy. lol, I don’t really care what people call me, they usually just call me mangeons, unless they’re COMPLETELY lazy.
@Elumas: That’s definitely my intent :)
Oh lord, I went to sleep and came back to…smores?
Nah, that’s face is too clear to be Monet’s anything. Right, ‘mo’?
@ asmo – You’re just so special, we have a million nicknames for you!
I think we may need a whole new question to discuss the derivations of your name and your feelings about each one.
TL: We have had several of these in the past, but of course, I can’t find them.
(Covers Uber in smores) You can thank me later, Batman.
(fill in the blank)
She’s as ______ as Monet.
blind?
talented?
French?
I’m cool with shortening, abbreviating, and general altering of my name. It’s kind of fun, actually, because my real name doesn’t really have that many nicknames, so being called a nickname is a new experience for me. Plus, I just like it when people respond to what I’ve said, so whatever they want to call me, if I know they mean me, I’m happy.
Flameboy always calls me LcG, which I don’t really understand, because I think of chica as the most important part of my username, but he says it looks cool, so whateeeeever.
@all. Apparently this entire question is now moot, as you can click and pick w/ an autofill feature.
Check it out by typing @
and watch what happens….
@Snoopy, good point! but it’s not exactly moot, because if you want to respond to more than one person, like for example if i wanted to say something to trustinglife at this point, when I type the @ sign, sometimes the drop down menu shows up, but other times it doesn’t.
the drop-down kind of freaked me out, at first. What the-?”
@La_chica_gomela I also tried to select everyone to see what would happen and you can only pick one…..similar to what you are saying….except I was trying to list everyone serially, like in an email….
@Knot – you’re still just plain Knot to me!
@Knotmyday LOL Yes, I actually asked to make sure it wasn’t a feature that had been there all along, but was told it came “online” so-to-speak just yesterday :)
@bythe- You’re the same ‘ol island kid to me. Irie.
I’m glad I was on this thread. :D
I tried to make my username as easy as possible. But you can call me “V” if you must!!
I’ve noticed (already) people have shortened it to “Cash” which is fine with me, but it’s not my name. That is my sons name.
It’s one of the reasons I chose this nickname. I was surprised that it was available back at wis.dm and now here.
It also makes me try to be more zen-like.
A lot of usernames are available here that wouldn’t be elsewhere.
A rose by any other name…......
