Why does my COD 5 menu not come up after returning from a game?

i just got COD 5, and when i play its fine, but when i exit back to the main menu, its black and i can hear it but i cant see anything. i figured out that if i “alt-tab” to the desktop and then back to the game, it works. but why would this ever happen? it makes no sense to me. any ideas?
