Can't sleep! Any ideas?

Asked by methymudkip (44points) January 5th, 2009

I’m yawning for England, but my brain just won’t shut down. I’ve been lying awake thinking about work tomorrow, UFC 93, the girl that got away, anything really – just trivial things.

Any tips for shutting your brain off?

A high carb snack always does it for me.

Try visualizing locking your cares away for the night. Imagine a large trunk with the lid thrown open. Examine each nagging thought. and then toss it in. When they are all in the trunk, slam down the lid and lock it. Place chains on it, a padlock.

Those thoughts are now tucked away until morning, because after all you can’t do anything about them until then anyway.

Good night and sleep well.

Alcohol and drugs never seem to give me a real satisfying sleep. Dr. Bodyhead would prescribe exercise. You’ve got to sleep if you’re worn out. Wear yourself out.

Run around the house 100 times in the middle of the night like a crazy person. That’ll do it.

Just don’t spill the tea and burn your nuts.

My dad once told me to count sheep.
The problem was that after I’d fitted about 20–30 of them in my room (don’t know how many because I never got to count them) the noise was so loud and the stench so disgusting that I lost any inclination to sleep anyway.

Maybe try counting ants next time.

Usually doing one or a combination of the following does it for me: a cup of chamomile tea, a hot bubble bath, and a good book. Also, listening to NPR late at night tends to put me straight to sleep.

Warm milk with a little vanilla and sugar in it (not too much or the sugar will wake you up!) Works like a charm for me…
