How many web design firms are there nationally?

I know a precise figure would be impossible, but I’m attempting to do some marketing research and haven’t found any sources for even an estimate.

My first question is, what is your definition of a web design firm. How many people would be in your definition of a firm? I say this because I have known many people who are one-person operations, and they do a much better job than some firms I know.

Specifically, I’m looking for incorporated “S Corporations” that are active and taxpaying in the United States right now. But any statistics regarding the total number of web design firms – with firm being defined as a “Any business, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation” – would be helpful.
