I’m about to purchase a banjo and i’m just wondering if anybody knows what kind of banjo Sufjan Stevens uses on his album – Illinois? More than one?
Should i go for an open back or with a resonator? I’m a total stranger to any string instrument, or any instrument for that matter.

If you’re playing bluegrass, use a resonator. For folk, use an open back. If you can tell me what kind of music you’re interested in I can give you more information.
Go to banjohangout.com and they can answer basically any question you might have about Sufjan Stevens or anybody else's banjo.
I think it lists in the album credits which instruments he uses…
Great, thanks! I’m kind of into alternative/indie music so an open back banjo for folk music sounds like the best match.
May I ask WHY you are purchasing a banjo?
I don’t really know why. I have wanted to learn how to play an instrument, and it sounds cool and so different to a guitar, which is to common these days. I also love the type of songs och hymns you can play on a banjo.
