What would you do if someone offered you $5500 to cut your hair?

Asked by shadling21 (6506points) January 8th, 2009

Check out this girl’s dilemma… What would you do, in her place?

Someone saw her videos online and offered her $5500 to cut her hair to a buzz cut. She’s considering doing it, but worries about what her boyfriend and family will think, and also worries that she’ll look bad. Not mentioned is the concern that it may all be a scam.

I say there’s plenty left over to buy a fancy wig.

tinyfaery's avatar

I’d do it. I’ve always wanted to shave my head.

wondersteph's avatar

I say pull the Britney Spears. That’s quite a bit of money.

SuperMouse's avatar

I would do it in a hot second.

EmpressPixie's avatar

I’d do it for cash. Um, and nothing but cash. I do not take check or visa.

desiree333's avatar

I dont care if my hair would grow back thee is no way in hell i would EVER cut my hair to a buzzcut just for $5500, thats insane unless I could buy a really high quality wig that would look real. But i would never spend the money on the wig, the person who was giving me the money would also have to provide a really nice wig.

jsc3791's avatar

I would do it! How often does an offer like that come around?!

Hair grows back.

miasmom's avatar

I’d have no problem cutting it and I’d donate it to Locks of Love, a great cause.

cwilbur's avatar

I’d cheerfully cut my hair to a buzzcut for $5500. Of course, I’d have to let it grow out first…..

Grisson's avatar

First of all there’s nothing wrong with cutting your hair for money. There is something that feels wrong about the offer. But then, it’s the internet, what can go wrong?

Assuming she was willing to cut her hair anyway, which it doesn’t really sound like she is, an alternative would be to donate the hair to ‘Locks of Love’ or a similar organization which takes donated hair and makes wigs for children who are receiving cancer treatment.

I just got my hair cut and didn’t do that. But then the kids might prefer to be bald rather than have silver hair.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

i say take the money and run.

i gave away my hair for free to locks of love, so i wouldn’t really have any qualms about doing it again. but i don’t have that much hair left right now, so i don’t think anyone would want mine. ha ha.

it kind of seemed like she was making it up at the beginning of the clip. I dunno, she kept looking away, and didn’t really seem like she knew what she wanted to say…

EDIT: @grissom, did you know they dye your hair after you give it to them?? Even if it’s not grey. The way it works is that one person’s head of hair does not translate exactly into one wig. Some people’s hair is thicker. Other people’s is thinner. Some people’s hair becomes more than exactly one wig, some people’s gets combined with others to make one wig that is one color. And of course they cut them and dye the hair they receive to suit the needs and desires of the recipients during the wig-making process. So there’s nothing wrong with donating grey or white hair. You can learn a lot more about the process at www.locksoflove.org.

As long as i could find a way to know it wasn’t a scam, I would totally shave my head. Who cares! Its only hair. Donating it is a wonderful option.

Bluefreedom's avatar

I’d do it since I’m in the military and I have to get a short, tapered haircut every 3 weeks anyway. That 5500 bucks translates into a new plasma screen television and about 20 other toys so let’s get this ball rolling. Who’s got the shears?

augustlan's avatar

If I could be sure of the money, I’d do it today. If her boyfriend leaves her because she doesn’t have her long hair anymore, what good is he anyway?

I had hair down to my butt and got a super short Halle Barry style. Everyone in the salon stopped what they were doing and watched, cheering me on! It was very liberating.

Nimis's avatar

@Bluefreedom Aw, man. Hate to break it to you.
But I doubt someone’s going to offer that money
to someone who’s in the military and already
gets a short, tapered haircut every 3 weeks.

I’m guessing part of the appeal is stripping
someone (a girl, in particular) of their very
long hair that they are apparently very
attached to (and probably attach some
personal and gender identity to).

To answer the actual question though.
Yeah, sure. Why not? It’s just hair. [Shrug.]

An interesting question would be:
What do you think the motivation is behind this offer?

asmonet's avatar

Haha, that’s stupid. Do it. Hair grows back, free money only happens once in a while.

I once cut off two and a half feet for free. Not that traumatic. :)

Jeruba's avatar

@Asmonet, so did I!

I’d do it for only five thousand, but first I’d ask for six. However, I would not respond to any cash offer I received online.

AlfredaPrufrock's avatar

The offer has to be an internet prank. The cost of a human hair wig doesn’t justify anyone paying that kind of money for rather nondescript hair.

Nimis's avatar

@AlfredaPrufrock I’m going to guess internet prank as well.
Otherwise, I’d guess someone’s scratching their weird psychological fetish.

@augustlan @asmonet @Jeruba Me too! Cutting off that much hair is liberating!

asmonet's avatar

Just some info on Locks of Love…
In most cases the hair donated to Locks of Love is not going to go to a child with cancer. They state that right out in the open. The children who get wigs are financially disadvantaged and suffering from long term or permanent hair loss – something that cancer generally doesn’t cause.

They also sell surplus hair back to wigmakers – generally the hair the deem to be unacceptable to their standards. You’d be surprised how much that is.

And to get the wig for free is a bit difficult I’ve heard, generally you have to purchase them at a very low cost sure, but no, not for free.

asmonet's avatar

@Nimis: I kept smacking my arm against things when I brushed my hair because I wasn’t used to having so little. :-(

For the record, I did donate to Locks Of Love, because I still thought they were a decent company even if they did nothing to correct the misinformation surrounding them. So somewhere a little boy or girl is running around with some shiny honey colored hair thanks to me. :)

And I’d totally do it again, but maybe with another company. Just to test someone else out.

Jeruba's avatar

In my case it was sheer contrariness. I had hair down to my rear when pixie cuts and bubble cuts were in fashion. Then, a few years into the sixties, long hair became the thing. That’s when I cut it.

buster's avatar

I would do it in a heartbeat. I cut my own hair anyways with clippers. Where do I sign up?

Nimis's avatar

@asmonet My neck was sooooo cold.
I used to joke that I was a hair farm because I never really did much
with my hair besides grow it out and cut it to donate to Locks of Love.

@Jeruba What does it look like now?

Mizuki's avatar

Blow them for $5500!

Grisson's avatar

@asmonet: Good to know! Perhaps I will consider donating next time: They might sell my hair to a halloween costume shop or something. Cool!

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@Grisson, what about what I said?

eambos's avatar

It’s just a temporary change. It’s not like you are being asked to put a tattoo on your face. Hair grows back.

Id shave all the hair on my body for $5500. What do I have to lose?

Grisson's avatar

@La_chica_gomela: Sorry, missed it first time around. If I let my hair grow again I’ll definitely donate.

KatawaGrey's avatar

I would totally do that! I have always wanted to buzz my hair so I could draw designs in it with hair dye. Also, it would be insanely easy to take care of and fun to caress!

Grisson's avatar

If you buzzed your hair, you could do like crop circles, too.

Nimis's avatar

Like a target for those damn pigeons?

elijah's avatar

@asmonet- I had no idea that’s how it worked, but I guess it’s still better than sweeping it up and throwing it in the trash.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I think my hair is too fine to be of any use to anyone, but I’d buzz it all off for $5K, pas de probleme.

Jack79's avatar

Are you kidding me? I’d even shave off my eyebrows for that much money! What’s the worst case scenario? She’ll just look like Sinead O’Connor for a couple of months…big deal. Hair grows back. It’s not as if she’s chopping off a leg or something!

asmonet's avatar

@elijahsuicide: I completely agree, thus why I still gave it away. :)

@aprilsimmel: My hair is medium fine, they will take pretty much any hair you can throw at them.

shadling21's avatar

Flutherbation time:
I’d do this in a heartbeat, once I’ve determined that it’s not a scam and received my pay.

I’d definitely do the crop circles thing too. Why not play with it while I could?

My only other worry would be how my hair would be when it grew back. I mean, my mom cut her hair short and since then, it’s been more unruly than ever.

aprilsimnel's avatar

@asmonet Really. That’s good to know, for the day when I have long, non-colored hair I want to rid myself of. It’s unnaturally auburn at the moment, thanks to Name Brand Hair Colouring #67.

Jeruba's avatar

@Nimis, longishly short.

Nimis's avatar

@Jeruba Hmmm…that reminds me of my first question.
Or is it shortishly long?

shadling21's avatar

@Nimis – I can’t believe that was your first question! I thought you’d been around here longer. It was a great one, by the way.

Jeruba's avatar

Nah, it’s longishly short. It’s not a long style worn a little short for its shape. It’s a short style worn a little long for its shape. And you thought there was no difference. Give me any hair and I can split it.

This is one of those funny train-wreck threads that I really love, sort of like watching a tennis match and a volleyball game played simultaneously across an in-progress game of shuffleboard, with a hula hooper or two thrown in.

miasmom's avatar

@April they take hair that is colored or permed, it just has to be a certain length

@asmonet The kids who get wigs, most of them have a medical condition that causes the hairloss, even if it is not cancer. Many of them get the wigs for free, but some do have to pay, it is based on financial need.

asmonet's avatar

@miasmom: ..Err, right. That’s what I said?

Nimis's avatar

@shadling21 Nope! I am a young jelly! I think its my spectacles.
They make me look older than my fluthering years.
Very intellectual-looking, you see?

@Jeruba I always feel a bit guilty because I lurve the train-wreck threads too.
Probably have done my share to derail them too. Sorry, moderators.
Bad jelly! [smacks own hand]

jrpowell's avatar

I pay 15$ for a buzz cut.

Blondesjon's avatar

As I only have seven hairs left on my head I would jump on that. A helluva a deal at $785.71 per hair.

miasmom's avatar

@asmonet I just thought you made it sound like their hair loss wasn’t a medical reason and that most of them had to pay for the wigs, but maybe I misread what you said. It just didn’t sound like you were too keen on them as a nonprofit.

galileogirl's avatar

I don’t know why you would worry about what others think…these days people would probably think you were having chemo. Throw in another $10 and I’ll shave my legs, too.

El_Cadejo's avatar

For 5500 you can shave all the hair on my body if you really wanted. Now wheres my damn money?

eambos's avatar

@uberbatman – WTH! I said the same exact thing and no lurve. My depression has begun to set in.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Eambos im just more popular than you ;)

augustlan's avatar

Bad batman, bad!

eambos's avatar

Just because your avavtar is the coolest thing there’s ever been, it doesn’t mean everone likes you.

asmonet's avatar

@miasmon: No, no, no. I think they’re fine, but misrepresented as being more charitable than I think they are after some research on my part.
