Porting an existing cell number to a very cheap, voicemail-only service?

Asked by cirrina (187points) January 9th, 2009

I’m on a (long out of contract) cell service plan with Sprint. I want to switch this number to a voicemail-only service (people should be able to call the number and leave voicemail, but I don’t need any other features and don’t need a phone to be able to call from that number) for the lowest possible monthly cost. Should I port it to a prepaid phone? (I happen to own a Virgin Mobile phone that’s not being used, but I’m not attached to using Virgin if there is a service that will be cheaper.)

Virgin is okay as far as prepay can go. I believe you can port your number over too…
I don’t know if they charge extra for VM, but if they do, don’t use it. Just use YouMail for your voicemal…works with any phone and it has many features.

Thanks! Virgin doesn’t charge extra for voicemail. I’m looking to see if people know of any option that’s especially cheap (since I don’t need to be able to use a phone with this number, just need people to be able to call it and leave a voicemail).

@cirrina

virgin has EXTREMELY cheap minute bundles together. You can buy as you need them, or get a small amount monthly.

The reason why I also suggested youmail is that you can listen to your VMs online, thus saving you minutes.

Cool, thank you! I use gotvoice now but youmail looks slicker!
