Why is the first president Bush called "Bush 41" on TV?

Asked by nashish (196points) January 10th, 2009

I keep hearing the terms “Bush 41” and “Bush 43” used in reference to the Bush presidents on MSNBC. I want to know where these terms came from!

Bush One was the forty-first president, Bush Two was the forty-third.

George Washington was #1. Does that help? :)

The order of the presidents is an easy way to tell the two Bushes apart, instead of having to say “George Herbert Walker Bush” or “George Walker Bush” each time. It’s shorthand.

In the case of 43, I think it was possibly a reference to his IQ.
