That depends if you’re religious or follow the facts on evolution.

I’m pretty sure there is in some form or another but I’m not entirely sure how…heaven, reincarnation… i really struggle with understanding reincarnation…and the whole point of it. Are we not just one being connected to everything and everyone else through various molecular structures? But still have a seperate sense of self? Are being and self seperate? Why would you live one life to try and work your way up the hierarchical ladder only to find yourself in a completely different life with no knowledge or understanding of where you have come from or where you are going? hmmmm???? pointless?

Anyway, I think it’s better to live your life believing in life after death… it provides hope and perhaps enables you to live you life more positively, graciously, spiritually?... And even if you die and heaven does not exist…or life after death… you’re not going to know are you so it doesn’t matter.

On the other hand, believing that there is NO life after death could make you live you life to it’s fullest, not enabling you to rely on a crutch – that there is a better place than this?? it could indeed create a more “taking the bull by the horns” culture? Or maybe it’s just cynical?

I don’t think i could try and live as if there is no life after death as I’ve been brought up believing this from day one… maybe there really are some things you can’t change about beliefs. It would be good to hear from someone who doesn’t beleive at all and how they live their lives….

I think the important question here should be Is there Fluther after death?

Spargett's avatar

I will dissolve and dissipate. Carbon, gasses, water. These things all go somewhere, therefor recycling back into the world it was pulled from.

Reincarnation? Technically yes. Afterlife? Basically.

Heaven is just a fairy tale. Honestly, think about it.

You bet, every believer does expect an afterlife.

@Spargett: You better hope you are right buddy.

We may all believe what we wish, but no one can know.

is there even life before it?

loser's avatar

Well, that’s generally what precedes death, yeah…

There is no evidence for life after death (as such a thing means to most people), but there is plenty of evidence that damage to or deterioration of our brain results in damage to our deterioration of our memories, intellect, personalities etc, and if severe enough, cessation of who we are.

Therefore, if we kill the brain, we end ourselves.

This does not prove that there is no life after death, it is impossible to prove the non-existence of anything, but it emphasizes that we have no evidence at all that life after death exists, or is even possible.

So I would suggest that life after death, as it is commonly defined, is mere wishful thinking.

The happiest answer, is to think about making a positive contribution while you’re alive, or as alluded to by Spargett, focus less on your own continuation and more on the continuation of your substance…the matter that is recycled into other life.

So be happy. What is currently forming part of your brain will end up forming part of the reproductive organ of a hagfish…a fitting end for some of us.

As a side I think we should sometimes remind ourselves of something….Most matter in the universe is not alive. The vast majority of the universe does not appear to possess living beings. The vast majority of species that have ever existed on this planet have gone extinct. The vast majority of species that have ever existed were not self aware. The majority of people who have ever lived, are now dead.

So here we are, among the chosen few beings who are lucky enough to be alive at this moment and cognisant of that fact…and yet the vast majority of us, even those living in the decadence of the first world, are thinking “What, is this it??? I don’t deserve limited time, I deserve eternal life! Gimme something more…with nice music, and I want wings, and to hang out with supernatural beings, and loved ones…and eat lots of nice food without gaining weight!”
