There is no evidence for life after death (as such a thing means to most people), but there is plenty of evidence that damage to or deterioration of our brain results in damage to our deterioration of our memories, intellect, personalities etc, and if severe enough, cessation of who we are.
Therefore, if we kill the brain, we end ourselves.
This does not prove that there is no life after death, it is impossible to prove the non-existence of anything, but it emphasizes that we have no evidence at all that life after death exists, or is even possible.
So I would suggest that life after death, as it is commonly defined, is mere wishful thinking.
The happiest answer, is to think about making a positive contribution while you’re alive, or as alluded to by Spargett, focus less on your own continuation and more on the continuation of your substance…the matter that is recycled into other life.
So be happy. What is currently forming part of your brain will end up forming part of the reproductive organ of a hagfish…a fitting end for some of us.
As a side I think we should sometimes remind ourselves of something….Most matter in the universe is not alive. The vast majority of the universe does not appear to possess living beings. The vast majority of species that have ever existed on this planet have gone extinct. The vast majority of species that have ever existed were not self aware. The majority of people who have ever lived, are now dead.
So here we are, among the chosen few beings who are lucky enough to be alive at this moment and cognisant of that fact…and yet the vast majority of us, even those living in the decadence of the first world, are thinking “What, is this it??? I don’t deserve limited time, I deserve eternal life! Gimme something more…with nice music, and I want wings, and to hang out with supernatural beings, and loved ones…and eat lots of nice food without gaining weight!”
