Apple makes a 6GB iPod?

You can not replace the battery without voiding the warranty, and from the questions you ask on fluther, it does not look like you know a lot about iPods. I would suggest you send it to Apple and pay them to repair them.

The most reliable service would be through Apple. But it is expensive. I saw some cheaper places online but I can’t vouch for any of them.

@aanuszek1 uh sorry I meat 8 GB…

desiree333's avatar

okay, well thats what I meant I want the Apple to fix it/replace the battery, so how much will it cost?

Call Apple, not Fluther.

Are you in Canada? The site I posted has the price in USD. I don’t know what the prices are in Canadian dollars.

do yourself a favor, save the money you’d put into a battery, and buy a new ipod. You’ll be happier too.

@PupnTaco: You’re welcome!!

RandomMrdan is onto something. New iPod models come out in September, you might as well just wait. Until then, try improving your iPods battery life by fully charging it, then totally running it out; repeat. This process usually works with all electronics.

im not sure anymore, i got my ipod battery replaced ages ago. But it is long dead now. Back then iPods were JUST becoming popular, set me back about 100 bucks AUD. I have to agree with RandomMrdan, better to get a new iPod.

An iPod touch though, they are expensive. How long have you had it for? I would suggest talking to apple about it, they are generally pretty nice about everything.
also, props to aanuszek1. Thats the best way of conserving any apple battery unfortunatly.

@aanuszek1 .. batteries don’t work like that anymore, esp. lithium ion batteries, they don’t have any memory at all, they just have a certain amount of life period, fully charging and discharging it (FYI discharging ANY battery completely is VERY VERY bad for it).

any new rechargeable electronics these days if you plan on storing them, store them with about 30% battery life (give or take 10%), otherwise it can damage the battery.

Like I was saying though, liion batteries only have a certain life expectancy, say like 300,000 hours or something like that, depending on what it is it can range up way further than that, and of course so many recharge cycles.

So whatever you do, discharging and recharging your ipod or any devices within the past like 4 years will only wear them out even further.

Call apple, because the last guy that tried to replace ipod batteries .. let’s just say got into a little bit of trouble, as far as a lawsuit on replacing batteries can go, in other words.. only apple is “allowed” to do it really.

@XCNuse Nickle cadmium batteries are still going to develop a memory, and the instructions with any of those are to run it to near dead battery. I bought an electric razor that needed to have that done, so I keep it off it’s cradle until it needs to be charged.

Also, as far as batteries and law suits go, I’m not sure but, I work at a Micro Center, and we sell batteries there for around about 20–50 dollars depending on what ipod and how large the battery is. Apple is not the only one that has the power or ability to work on ipods. I am pretty sure they can’t bring a lawsuit on your for buying a battery and trying to install it yourself. And there are outlet stores on the internet that sell ipod batteries and their service to install it for you. Kind of like how the technicians at my place of work are apple certified, and will do warranty work on apple computers.

@RandomMrdan, true i mean you can always do it yourself, it was just a guy was doing it for a profit and he got into a little bit of trouble.

As for batteries, yea i mean NiCads and nickel metal hydrides do, but .. it’s becoming more and more rare to come across those batteries these days unless they’re like AA battery types etc. in more.. electrically intensive gadgets these days though it’s far more common to see lithium ion batteries.

I mean yea you’ll come across them but.. that number is going down and down each month.

why is everybody telling me to buy a new iPod? My iPod touch was $400 and I just got it last Christmas (the one before the one that JUST passed) Even though iPod touch gen 2 are only like $3oo or something, why would I go and buy a whole new iPod? Which leads me to my next question: Are batteries expensive? If so then I will just buy a new iPod, but I am a student and I dont have a ton of money to throw away on a new iPod when I have a good one alrerady. I need to know: How much would a battery cost in CANADIAN dollars for a iPod touch 1st gen 8GB???? About how long do they last? And is it really worth it to buy battery, or should I just buy a new iPod? Thanks.

desiree333's avatar

also I mean a battery from apple, or from a legitimate store like future shop, or the source, in Canadian dollars please?

roons's avatar

@desiree333 ah i didnt know how long ago you bought it. I am not sure how much they would cost, i would reccomend calling up your local apple store or apple repair store and asking them. After my battery was replaced in my iPod it lasted about another 2 or 2 1/2 or so? After that it needed replacing again and then i got an iPhone :P

desiree333's avatar

@roons, thanks. If the battery is not expensive then I’ll buy it. After I do buy this first battery though once its done, I wont bother buying another one, I’ll just buy a whole new iPod. Though I’m sure there will be like a 4rth gen by then :P If the battery is almost as expensive as a new iPod then I’ll just buy a new iPod.

roons's avatar

@desiree333 yeah most definately. By the time my iPod died for the 2nd time (1st gen click wheel) they started coming out with video iPods. Let us know how it goes! :)

@desiree333 next time around I’d get apple care if it’s within your budget. It covers your iPod’s battery.

And for clarification, I failed to realize you had a fairly new ipod touch, for some reason I skipped over the “touch” part and assumed it was an older 1st gen ipod that only had 8gb of hard drive, which made me assume if you were going to spend money to fix an ipod as old as 5 years ago, you’d better spend the money on something like a 149.99 dollar ipod nano.

If you’re ipod isn’t a year old yet, check with apple to see whether you’re still covered under the one year’s manufacturer warranty.

desiree333's avatar

@randomprdan, thanks. I hope I still have the warranty.

XCNuse's avatar

I had a warranty on my first gen ipod touch, and when i realized my headphones were coming apart I felt like checking to see if my ipod even had apple care on it.

It did.. 5 minutes before i checked, It didn’t even last a full year, it was like 2 weeks shorter than a whole year I’m still not very happy.

Peterfabuloso's avatar

an apple ipod battery will cost 59.99 plus the cost of shipping and handling. If you purchase the Apple care protection plan it will actually be included in the 39.99 cost of the A.P.P. You will be able to get your battery replaced one time for the 39.99.

Peterfabuloso's avatar

If you get your battery replaced by anyone else but Apple your warranty will be voided…
