At what point should I be concerned?

Asked by EmpressPixie (14767points) January 12th, 2009

I smashed my face into my boyfriend’s shoulder this weekend. It was a miscalculation on my part, I meant to dump him into the snow. Instead I slammed my glasses into my face.

It hurts to make facial expressions at the moment. Since this is all right at the temple and I don’t know that much about my face structurally speaking, at what point should I be concerned? Like, I have the vague idea that everything is more delicate right at the temple, but I don’t have any real logic to back that up. I know the area is probably bruised, but is there a point at which I should see a doctor. Is that one day? Two? A week? Stop being a wimp and take it like a lady?

I have a feeling it is the last one, but I wanted to ask for input anyway.

I’d go asap just to be safe

I have no idea what I’m talking about.

If you’re really hurt, what is the doctor going to do, put your face in a cast? I’d try to stop being a wimp until someone saw my face and asked why I wasn’t in the hospital.

If you have headaches or insurance, I’d go to the doctor. Hope you are ok! Maybe stick to throwing snowballs instead next time.

How is your boyfriend’s shoulder?

EmpressPixie's avatar

Utterly and completely unbothered.

Five minutes after: “How is your shoulder?”
“Fine.”
“It doesn’t hurt?”
“No.”
“Not even a little?”
“No.” Then he made some reference to karma. Which I totally deserved. Sigh.

@jonsblond I am SURE I have not learned this lesson. I will continue to roughhouse. I will just learn to re-calibrate for boniness next time.

@Empress, seriously hope you are ok. Maybe kick ass next time!

Hmm. IANAD, but try an OTC painkiller like Aleve first if you haven’t already. “Hurts to make facial expressions” could be a muscle thing or a nerve thing. If Aleve doesn’t work, then I’d go to the doctor, to be on the safe side.

I haven’t done a painkiller because whatever is going on, it must be in the muscle. Which is to say, while it hurts to move about up there, it doesn’t hurt constantly. Only if I try to move my face (which, as I am unable to type without making my talking facial gestures and make rather large ones…. I just did).

Most analgesic painkillers are also anti-inflammatories. If you have bruising, these will definitely help alleviate some of the pain.

Take an aspirin or acetaminophen tablet.

EP, this kind of thing always happens to me! If anyone is even rough-housing near me, I am the one who ends up hurt :(

Maybe some ice on the area? Hope your poor little face feels better soon…

Yeah, take an anti-inflammatory to help with it. Other than that, I don’t think there’s any cause for concern. Of course if you start feeling weird or fuzzy headed, then I’d probably head in to get things checked out.

Great! Thanks everyone. I’ll take some Excedrin and not worry unless symptoms persist or worsen.
