Because it is easier than during sex? ;-)
Edit: Good question. I’ve often wondered this myself.
There’s just something so terribly sexy about cigarette ash falling on the sheets. Also, there’s always the possibility of setting the bed on fire! That’s almost as exciting as sex!
Like Jbor, I smoke and I don’t. I think that it’s just movie magic bullcrap.
No, my boyfriend smokes after sex, and so does this lady at work [I only know because she was asking me if I make my boyfriend not smoke, or nag at him. It just came up.]
you’re balancing the deficit of energy used. it’s the “water-back” after a stiff drink. it’s the swig of a good cold beer after a shot of tequila. nicotine takes the edge off the euphoria of orgasmic highs. and it regulates.
i’m not a smoker at all—the occasional cigar every once in a while—but it’s like the cognac and cigar after a really good meal.
if you are not a smoker, you just experience “after-sex” like: “man, i’m hungry—are you hungry? i dont know but i have a taste for popcorn and hot sauce.” and then in the middle of the night you actually go downstairs and make popcorn and hot sauce with some real cold Hawaiian punch. that’s the cigarette for for non-smokers.
^Uh, what?

I always figured cigarettes are a stimulant and people are sleepy after sex. There you go. At least, I always assumed it was the case. Or maybe someone in the film industry did it, put it in a movie and it caught on. It’s gives the character something to do at least. You know, besides whoever is in the bed…again.
@charlie, “nicotine takes the edge off the euphoria of orgasmic highs.” Why in the world would you want to do that?? ;-)
it’s like this: you want to bask in the glow of love and that’s ok for non-smokers because they don’t smoke anyway. the need for a cigarette is only for smokers who need to balance or offset the natural feeling of “after-glow” because nicotine always follows things like coffee or stress or nervousness or even waking up in the morning.
the body does not need nicotine, but if you are a smoker, you do—especially “after” things.
“nicotine takes the edge off the euphoria of orgasmic highs.”
WOW! who said that?
sounds like a great book quote…
Asmo said everything I was going to say. I’ll say it anyway.
@charlie: lol4rl
I think it’s probably a media thing. A cigarette company likely paid a television or film company to show characters smoking after sex hoping people would relate smoking with sex. And that probably caught on.
I dont smoke squares but I would guess its like smoking after a big meal. You feel satisfied and want something to top it off, something familiar and soothing (which I think is the case with many people addictied to nicotine). And, I agree with the media thing
I just asked my smoker friend and he said “its part of the release”.
Why do people smoke after sex? Well most smokers only go about 40 minutes between a cigarette. If you take a good look at a good bedtime session then you are pushing at least the hour and a half mark. When you’re done (well at least when I am done) I feel pumped up like I just got done working out or something, sometimes I want to smoke. It also can be force of habit, like something people just do. There is no “real” reason, it is just something that has been happening for along time thanks to movies and stereotyping the situation.
Good sex equals work and good work is often rewarded with a smoke when finished.
to speak to the film industry thing, i think it was both a hollywood thing and also a fact that a cigarette was needed because back in the day, not only were cigarettes fashionable, but it was also the nicotine factor, which hollywood at the time did not care about.
“You feel satisfied and want something to top it off, something familiar and soothing.” I’m loving these quotes. I think I’ll stick to a bowl of ice cream. You know…something to cool me off, LOL.
@jbfletcherfan my point exactly. see above on popcorn, hot sauce and hawaiian punch. smoker or not, it’s a “top-off” or you can just roll over in the wet spot and go to sleep.
No comment, but I’m sure laughing.
Cigarettes are awesome because all three of you can lay there, exhausted and share it.
I am actually not a smoker (er, tobacco smoker), and even I will sip on one after sex, especially wild boot-knockin’ sex, I think because the languid sensation of dreamy smoking prolongs the amazing after-sex after glow…
Because they were doing it too fast. sorry
@charliecompany34 – Not only do I love your response to this question, but I love other people’s responses to your response. Hilarious!
I think the feeling of release is important. To a smoker, it’d probably be like urinating after holding it in for a long long time.
What about avoidance? I’m sure some smokers do it simply to have something to do, to keep them occupied while they determine what to do next. That would depend on the situation, of course. If it was a casual sex kind of thing, maybe the smoker is avoiding connecting with the other person. I could be way off the map with this one – tell me honestly.
Nocountry is the closest. I’m a smoker, and I always smoke after sex. It’s languid and dreamy and oh-so-satisfying! I do the same after eating. It’s like the icing on top of the cake. Ahhhh.
ha! That’s actually why I quit smoking – I realized every time I ate I was thinking about my post-meal ciggy…WHOA
Think about it! Same reason someone smokes after first waking up in the morning, after coming out of the supermarket, after eating food, after any length of time they haven’t been able to smoke. They need a friggin NICOTINE FIX!
after sex shitloads of endorphins are released into the bloodstream and smoking slows the flow of blood in the body extending the natural high of the “after sexedness”
i am sure that the dessert factor, addiction, and media also play into this
