Do your senses run your life?

Asked by coffeenut (6174points) January 15th, 2009

mine do, my five senses are overwhelming, the smell of a upcoming rain storm, the sight of the many colours of a sunset/sunrise, the sound of wood on fire, the great feeling of really hot water, the taste of great coffee. I can’t get enough of any of these and many many more.
how about you?

If we didn’t have them.
We wouldn’t have much of a life would we.

Not to mention our species wouldn’t have even come into existence never mind died out.

Our senses anchor us to the outside world.

I’m not refering to “just” having senses, I mean really extreamly powerful sensations.

My actions run my life. What I do today determines how I will live tomorrow.

Sometimes. My sense of hearing can become highly attuned to certain sounds. I cannot, cannot, cannot stand the sound of someone chewing—especially crunchy things. I can’t describe what it does to me but I’m going to try. It gives me physical feelings of cringing and weakness, as well as strong emotional surges. If I can’t get away from the person or make them stop, I generally feel a very strong need to hit them or have a total breakdown.

My parents, generally thinking I was just being difficult either ignored my requests that they not do it around me or emphasized their chewing noises to be completely obnoxious. They thought they were joking around, but it was basically the most obnoxious thing on the face of the planet. As an adult, I was reading an article and realized it was more likely this.

Edited to add: I also become nauseated from feeling “wrong” fabrics (fabrics with textures that don’t feel good to me—usually very lush things like velvets).

@EmpressPixie How do you handle hearing yourself eat? Thanks for that link…I learn something new about my stupid brain everyday :)

My experience is more like EP’s, I am easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation (too much noise, too much movement, too many people). It brings on a panic attack if I haven’t prepared (taken a Xanax) for it in advance For instance county fairs, concerts and Chucky Cheese’s are a freakin’ nightmare for me (even with Xanax). Sometimes just being home with 3 children is too much!

It doesn’t always bother me. Lately, I’ve noticed that I become sensitive like that on days when I’m going to have a migraine later (but not always).

I’ve also stopped eating at various times because I couldn’t handle it. If I’m really hungry, I’ll switch to soup or tea or something, do something else for a while, then go back and eat later.

i cannot decide on my favourite sense. I do wonder what it is like for people to lose a sense like sight and have the others come into effect even more.
