How do you pronounce Güell and Batlló?

Parc Güell seems to be pronounced ‘Gway’. :)

As for Casa Batlló the woman in that video pronounces it Bat-LO.

My grandmother spoke Catalan as her first language, I think I’ll double-check with my mom as soon as I speak to her.

I looked at Wikipedia to see if the double L is pronounced the same in Catalán as it is in Spanish (because the two languages are very similar), and it is. That means you are correct in saying baht-YOH, although the T combined with the double L almost makes a soft CH (but not as extreme as SH).

Güell would be ‘gooEHy,’ because ü indicates that you pronounce the U as a separate vowell in the word (and again the double L is a Y sound). Usually UE (no dots) is a dipthong that is prounounced ‘EH.’

A word like guerra (war) is pronounced ‘gEHra,’ whereas the word vergüenza (shame) is pronounced ‘bergooEHnsa.’

I speak Spanish and know the pronounciations regarding that, but I’ve found conflicting rules on pronounciating Catalán online, as well with my dictionary. Güell and Batlló are names, of course, and may not even follow those rules. I am hoping for someone who has heard the pronounciations from native speakers. Asmonet, please do ask. She may know for certain how to say these names.

Worst case scenario I can ask some of the Spanish teachers when I head in for class over the next week. I’m sure at least one of them would know as I think at least one is from Spain.

Remember, Spanish is not Catalán. There is more of a French influence with the latter. Thanks.

I’ve just spent a week in Barcelona. They pronounce “Parke Well” (no “y” sound), “parque” is like “park”, but ending with a vowel that sounds like the “e” in “bet”. The “g” is soft, not like the strong one in “Guatemala” or “dog”.
Concerning “Casa Batlló”, I found that every person pronounces it different. Even Catalan speakers. The audioguide had different voices, and each one said it different. I am a linguist, I was very interested in knowing the right pronunciation. As a proper name I’m afraid you have to find a descendant with the same name in order to know the “original” or “right” pronunciation.

Hi, I’m a member of the Güell family. The Güell last name comes from the Spanish pronunciation of the surname Well. When admiral Well (Wales) settled in Barcelona and had children, there was no “W” in the Spanish alphabet. Therefore the nearest phonetic pronunciation was Gu with diericis in the u instead of the English W, there the surname Güell was born. The correct pronunciation is Well, as in a water well. Thru the centuries Catalans have changed the LL at the end for the Y pronunciation making it sound like “Wey” in English. Instead of the correct “Well” as it was meant to be
