Are my fishes going to die?please help,before I'm going to sleep?

Asked by oksana_bm (145points) January 17th, 2009

I have had my fish for 3–4 months, it is that kind of fish that need to stay in tank alone because they eat each other (BETTA). Mine is male. today at pet store sell-man said my fish can live in the same tank only with 2 females. so I bought them. and now I’m worry he can eat them :( please, did some one had this kind of fish and REALLY know can I go to sleep and don’t feel guilty in the morning or should I separate them now??

Male + female = babies.

I have had only male bettas but they are extremely agressive with other males, and possibly females. I never dared to mix them because 1) I don’t want dead fish 2) I don’t want fish babies.

I would say separate them because you’ve had your male betta for, what, 3–4 months already? He is USED to that space and if provoked, even by a female, he could attack.

Why did you buy them anyways? Betta males are meant to be alone.

Get a clear divider for the tank, kind of like a screen. Then they can’t hurt each other.

seekingwolf , everyone need some friends!!!! and that stupid guy said it is ok’ to have 3 of them in the same tank! ok….. now I’m crying…...

asmonet's avatar

Relax, get the dividers in the morning. It’s nature, animals eat each other. You can’t change that.

@oksana_bm

It’s going to be okay, please don’t cry.
Well look at this, at least you know now before anything happened, right?

The truth is, there are sociable fish and not so sociable fish. Male bettas are not that sociable and are very aggressive. They LIKE to be alone and will hurt others and themselves if put together.

That guy was dumb, you’re right. He probably just wanted to make a sale.

Don’t feel bad. Just put them in separate bowls for tonight, and get dividers later, as asmonet suggested. It’ll be okay.

asmonet !!! “animals eat each other.” u killing me!!!!! I can even think about.
ok, can I just leave one girl with him so they can be “friends”?

seekingwolf's avatar

@oksana_bm

You need to understand that male bettas aren’t nice and can’t be put with any fish.
If you put that female in there, you risk having her killed by him.
I really don’t suggest you do that.

Fish don’t really get “lonely” okay? They’re fish. If you feed them and keep them clean they are happy.

Keep them separated for now, so you can get a good night’s rest and figure things out in the morning. @seekingwolf has the right idea.

dirtydevil521's avatar

i think you should just take the fish out…the only time male and female betta fish should be in the same tank is when your getting ready to breed them

asmonet's avatar

One time we had goldfish and turtles and they were separate, then we put them together. The next morning, we found bits of golden fin floating everywhere.

Adina1968's avatar

I think you should separate them so that you can have peace of mind and get a good nights sleep. Then tomorrow you can do your research and decide what you think is the best thing to do with the fish. :-)

To clarify asmonets statement it was ‘My’ gold fish :-(... and they where Alligator Snapping Turtles…

thanks! I’m going to try to return girls to the pet store tomorrow ( please don’t think it’s about money!!) my tank is big vase so I’m not sure there are dividers for that. and I have only one more tank to keep 2 girls in it, what I think is not good idea :(
I’m filling so guilty…..... I need some ice cream

asmonet's avatar

hehehe, KingMalefic’s goldfish totally got ate.

This might help.

They’re supposed to be bookends.
But seems like a good beta solution.

They can enjoy each other’s company. Sort of.
And you don’t have to worry about them beating each other up.
Maybe there should be a human version of this. Har.

KingMalefic's avatar

@asmonet : I ate your pupsicle! :-P

shadling21's avatar

@Nimis – Best suggestion yet.

desiree333's avatar

@Nimis, I really want to get those bookend bowls. They are so cool.

seekingwolf's avatar

@Nimis

Yeah cool find!
I’d totally get one for my fish, but I have a Black Moor and he’s kinda fat. :( he wouldn’t fit.

Uhhh no, you definitely can not have a male living with two females. They will fight, and one or more of them will die. If you dont want this to happen, id advice you separate them, or even return them to the store and complain about the sales guy. You can only put a female betta with a male when her eggsac is ready and shes about to mate. After they mate however they need to be separated again, or the male may kill the female as well as the babies.

As far as dividers go, if your going to take that route, dont get clear dividers or anything, if the bettas can still see each other, they are going to freak out whenever they look at the others which will put unnecessary stress on the fish.

I dont know how large of a tank, or bowl you have, but bettas can live quite peacefully with other fish. If your tank is large enough, why dont you get some mollies or something to keep your betta company.

Nimis's avatar

@uberbatman Do you think they will eventually acclimate
to being next to each other like those betas in the fish stores?

I always remembered them in their own little clear bowls, but right next to each other. Then again, poor guys. They weren’t the happiest little things. I’d always see a floater. =(

Sorry, folks. I’d listen to Uber. He knows way more about fish.
Testament to the fact: Uberbatman may have the happiest fish that ever existed.

asmonet's avatar

lawls, floater.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Nimis no, they wont eventually acclimate to being next to each other. If you watch those cups long enough, you’ll see bettas occasionally puff up at each other. And yea bettas get kept absolutely horribly in pet stores. Theres an pretty high mortality rate on them, but no one cares because theyre so cheap.

this is how the bettas come into stores.

asmonet's avatar

@uberbatman: Sadface.

When I get fish again, you’re designing the whole thing. No arguments.

Nimis's avatar

@uberbatman That makes me sad. =(
All fish should be as happy as yours.

Fancymouse's avatar

Yes my brother had this kind of fish and his was with a female it was sad because i saw the famale put the males head in her mouth. My betta fish also ate gold fishies. you should defintly seperate
