I need to sniff up air for my ears to go back to normal, what is it?

Asked by joyonaramolva (4points) January 18th, 2009

I had it for as long as i can remember. It’s like the pressure pops out of my ear. So then i need to sniff up air in order to feel that pressure again. It’s extremely annoying…i need to do real dumb faces in public when i sniff up the air because i cant take it! I try to get used to it(without the pressure) but i cant…its like if i was under water or just covered my ears and all i could hear is the bass of my voice!!!

Is this alergies? try Clarityn, Zyrtec or Benadryl.

The cause is an unbalance in the air pressure on either side of the ear drum. If this is happening without you changing altitude, you need to see an ENT specialist.

Good news; it can be treated and cured.

I’m an Audiologist.

It sounds like you have Estachian Tube Dysfunction which causes the air pressure in the middle ear space to be different than the air around you. You can feel the pressure in the ears, and sometimes it hurts; and it might muffle your hearing a little.

Several things can cause this, such as allergies or enlarged adenoids. Consider consulting an otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose & Throat) for an evaluation.

Go to your doctor, he/she will be able to tell you exactly what to do. Unless you run into someone here that actually had that condition, and was cured from it, any answer is a crap shoot.
