What's your favorite old adage?

Asked by Blondesjon (34000points) January 18th, 2009 from iPhone

Grandpa always said, “Cookin’ lasts, fuckin’ don’t.” Appropriate? Probably not but very true.

How about you folks. What sage advice do you fondly remember from your elders?

I don’t know of any, sorry. I don’t glean knowledge via recital.

I try to be as optimistic as I can, whenever I can, so I’ve always liked the adage “Every cloud has a silver lining” because it signifies to me that no matter how bad something might be, there is always hope and/or the belief that something positive will somehow come out of it.

Well there is one that I like: People that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. I don’t know where it’s from, but I dig it.

Essentially it means that you shouldn’t criticize the flaws of others unless you are willing to be scrutinized and criticized yourself.

Here’s one I just discovered.

“My idea of paradise is a perfect automobile going thirty miles an hour on a smooth road to a twelfth-century cathedral.” Henry James.

It’s lonely at the top, because it’s so crowded at the bottom.

Lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.

Even if you win the rat race, you’re still a rat.

On the corporate ladder, if you look down, you will see nothing but people looking up, if you look up, you will only see assholes.

Second place is a nice way to say “you’re the first loser”

Always feed your horse before you feed yourself.

Always muck your horses stall yourself, your horse will love you for it, it will be done right, it will keep you warm in the winter, it will help grow your garden in the summer, there’s just no downside.

If your horse runs a ¼ mile race, walk him ½ mile to cool.

I was well versed on these, if you need a definition, just ask.

“This too shall pass.”

It’s something my Nana always says that basically points to the fact that life goes on, and one shouldn’t dwell on the negatives because 1.) there’s nothing anyone can do about it, and 2.) whatever it is it will eventually work itself out.

Being mine own mind’s mine, I’ve authored this nuggett,..
“Keep Your Own Ass Covered”
.........................................
then, theres the “old addage” == “if it flies, it dies”
Love that. ‘cause seems a lot of “the free” peoples, believe that to “fly” is credentials for substantial significance of their established glorified reality of “I’m Great”, and “You’re Not!!” really sucks people. shame on you for that. Saint Paul calls you “Angels of Light”. not something to be at all. It’s the big thing out U. Eat of that and you’ll get real big, for sure, but, like a Macy’s day balloon, you’ll all pop some time.
Hello, I’m Mr. Pin. let me touch U!!
Remain “un-leavened”, ......... it aint so bad. you’ll survive the trials. now at hand. [who am I?]
Ohhh, did I just touch a neuron?
maybe it’s a tumor.
“It’s not a tumor”
“Get Out!!”
“I’ll be back!!”
..............................

question, “what is the source of the atmosphere”
et al,. if u went straight up forever, where would u end up?
pardo, i don’t mean to insult your intellegence, but, do u actually believe what you just asked?

“Throw enough shit against the wall, some of it is bound to stick.” My Dad always used that one, and he meant it in the context of telling tall tales. My Dad was quite the story teller.
