How smart are you?

Asked by peyton_farquhar (3741points) January 19th, 2009

Are you smarter than your friends? Are you smarter than your parents? Are you smarter than the person sitting to your left? Am I smarter than you? Is smartness proportional to degree of education?

There’s a reason why a national survey of “smartness” hasn’t been reportedly conducted. Even IQ tests are often poor at analyzing a person’s true potential. Any measure of smartness at this juncture is completely arbitrary.

As such, any answer you get will in the form of “Smart enough [not] to…”, which as an isolated example of a person’s intentions or character does nothing in the way of analyzing their potential at all.

I’m a janitor at Harvard but… I’m smarter than everyone there. Sometimes I see equations on a chalkboard and I just finish them.

I’m not very smart. I am okay with it.

pekenoe's avatar

According to certain unnamed persons on Fluther, I’m borderline ignorant. I don’t have a problem with that…. I’m happy :)

According to the people that I know in the flesh, I’m smart as hell. Don’t have a problem with that either….. I’m happy :)

Do I remember an old saying “Ignorance is bliss”? ........ I’m happy :)

galileogirl's avatar

Hey the asker is a relative newbie, is there a way s/he can access old questions so s/he won’t be repetitive?

shadling21's avatar

@galileogirl – That deserves a question of its own. Mind if I ask it?

shadling21's avatar

I don’t know how to word it! Hahaha
I give up, feel free to post your own question.

I’m sure it’s been asked before, too. But when I Google it, nothing comes up.
Maybe we should just make a suggestion to a developer?

El_Cadejo's avatar

well we all know fluthers built in search is crap so good luck finding the questions like that. WebMynd is awesome though, and has a built in fluther search that works wonders (usually if you hit one or more words in the question title, it will come up) So that would be the best way for new users to search through old questions.

shadling21's avatar

I know, but for those of us not using Firefox 3.0 or higher… There’s zilch. Plus, new users aren’t told, “go get this extension, so you can search the questions properly”. How are they supposed to know?

El_Cadejo's avatar

well first off if your not using firefox 3.0 or higher SHAME ON YOU! and there is that nifty little WebMynd thing chilling on the side of the fluther page. Maybe when you sign up it should be pointed out as well. unno.

For the “old timers”, repeat questions do not require you to comment.

For us “newbies”, sometimes, old questions posed to new minds will get better answers. At the risk of injuring venerable Old Timers feelings.

Ask away Newbies. Old Timers…if you don’t like repetition, move to the next question.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@pekenoe brilliant. Lets see how fast you get sick of seeing “why is the sky blue?” if everyone just kept reasking questions.

i will agree though, there are certain questions that are ok to ask again for those new IE how did you come up with your username/why did you choose your avatar. But i really wouldnt consider them great questions in the first place.

pekenoe's avatar

@uberbatman : me neither “consider them great questions” but there are new members joining all the time that didn’t see that question 2 weeks ago.

How about an old timer forum where newbies questions do not get posted?

When you have acquired the required amount of ???? whatever you are selected for an invite to the old timers forum, you can chose to join or refuse.

Maybe the moderators could put a stop to repetitive or stupid questions?

I think that no matter what question is asked and who asked it, they deserve the same respect as anyone else. They don’t deserve to be ridiculed when they post their first question as a newbie. It doesn’t take that long to skim the new posts and pick the ones you want to respond to, if repeats bother you that much then why stay?

El_Cadejo's avatar

@pekenoe “How about an old timer forum where newbies questions do not get posted? When you have acquired the required amount of ???? whatever you are selected for an invite to the old timers forum, you can chose to join or refuse.”

kind of defeats this whole purpose of a huge community if we’re segregated doesnt it?

“It doesn’t take that long to skim the new posts and pick the ones you want to respond to”

its not about just ignoring them, if we didnt really care about repeat questions, you would soon see the whole front page covered in that crap, hiding all the good questions. I know your too new here to know about it, but when fluther first introduced the iPhone app the front page was constantly filled with “how do i brick my iPhone” and other repeat questions OVER AND OVER. Ask anyone else who was here long enough to remember, it was horribly annoying.

“if repeats bother you that much then why stay?”

Why would i abandon an amazing site/community over a few bad apples (im referring to the questions, not the users)

pekenoe's avatar

@uberbatman Exactly, so, why bother to comment on posts that are repetitive or stupid in your opinion? It’s a waste of time, does not show off your knowledge, only serves to irritate newbies that may have a very valuable asset that would further Fluther. Not everyone is a smart as we, they may actually need to know what they ask.

I like that “Further Fluther” but, I’m easily amused.

Any onterest in beginning a movement designed to “Further Fluther Fervor for Future Flutherers Forming Feverish Fluther Families ”

Nuff said, this is a great site, but patience and tolerance will be key for the ultimate experience and survival of the site. It seems that open forums degenerate into bickering flaming contests that are followed quickly by their demise. Let’s not let that happen here.

pekenoe's avatar

onterest????? interest, gee whilikers!

El_Cadejo's avatar

@pekenoe im sorry, but did you not read this part

To my left-rock
To my right-hard spot

A. Fluther encourages new members to bring in fresh ideas for general entertainment and enlightenment
B. Since there is no easy way to access all previous questions, new members will sometimes be repetitive.

Consider this:
1. New members should look around and answer questions before they rush to ask a lot of questions.
2. Veterans should remember that Fluther attracts people who are new to the site but also relatively new to the world, and therefore some patience may be required.
3. In the final analysis, the best experience comes from including people of all ages, cultures and life experience so don’t sweat the small stuff (simple questions, poor English grammar, spelling, etc).

Also if new members seem clueless, we can always comment them a clue {;D

Jesus Christ I’m sorry I asked!
however I’m also not the one spending hours arguing over inanities with trolls on the interwebs
