How would our lives change if people had no fingers?

Asked by Introverted_Leo (1957points) January 20th, 2009

This one’s for Daloon. :P

And much lurve to jasongarret for answering, “If I had no fingers, my fly would always be open,” where this question started in Daloon’s thread.

If I had no fingers, my normally cogent, intelligent, and thoughtful quips would look like this…

Our lives wouldn’t change, because we wouldn’t have ever known fingers.
On the other hand (haha) if we all lost our fingers suddenly, life would change drastically in every possible way.

@elijahsuicide: you know what I meant! Alright, if we knew what life was like with fingers then suddenly we didn’t have any, then how would it change? :P

Quite honestly, we would never be who we are today. The opposable thumb was one of the enabling factors that allowed our distant ancestors to start wielding tools. Without the thumb, we could not write, which would have lead to a seriously stunted culture (though I highly doubt we’d ever have gotten to the point of having cities without our thumbs, let alone our other four fingers).

With regards to your clarification, tube socks would probably become very popular as some type of stylish limb covering.

I can see this drastically affecting sex and nose-picking.

oh man all those wedgie’s would go un-picked!

The pace of life would suddenly be a lot slower with vanished digits. A LOT slower.

Until people learned how to manipulate their toes.

Toes would adapt, but in the meantime, itches would go unscratched, voice activated software would actually be made to work, and the bastards who package toys so nobody can get them open without a trip to the ER would finally be tortured and punished daily.

Counting in base 10 would be pointless. Would we have to switch to binary, or would we lose our arms, too? If we had to switch to base 0 we would all have floating point exceptions and crash.

A WORLD WITHOUT SCRATCHING!! AGHHH!! But then again, there would be no papercuts. :D

Our legs would become more flexible.
Oh, and sports other than soccer (and swimming?) would die.

Introverted_Leo's avatar

For some reason I find soccer guys more attractive than athletes who play other sports, so I would have no problem with that, T-life. :P

As for football…I mean, American football fans, that would definately be a problem.

@loser: I see you’re really getting into character. How’s life without those fingers, eh?

…I just realized that if I had no fingers I wouldn’t be able to play piano very well. :(

Music with no fingers? No problem!

Check out this video . Not only does this guy have no fingers…he’s got no arms, no feet, no legs! Very inspiring, too.
