I recently got contacts and i really do like them, i am just having trouble getting them into my eye… I can get them out no problem. I keep shutting my eye just as i get close, even when holding them open with my fingers. Any suggestions on how to “train” my eyelids?

You’ll get used to it over time. Like everything else.
When I first got contacts my eye doctor taught me the “two hand technique” it goes like this:
Put your right contact lens on the tip of your right index finger.
Take your left hand, reach over and grab your top right eyelid to hold it open.
While you are holding open your right eye, use your right middle finger to pull down the lower lid and put in the right lens.
This technique helped me get used to putting them in because if you are holding your eye open by the lid you can’t close it. Once you get the hang of it you will probably be able to switch to putting them in with one hand.
@SuperMouse No, you still can… Thats the same thing i was taught. Its not workin so much.
Maybe its because my dad lost most of his eyesight due to something going into his eye… maybe?
@Kiev749, maybe the only thing that will help is time and patience. No matter what, if you really want to wear them you’ll get the hang of it.
You might try, in the shower, when you’re clean, touching your eyes with your fingers to start desensitizing the blink reflex. This could maybe also cause you to go blind, so, tread carefully.
I can’t put in my contacts unless I look into a mirror.
Practice makes perfect here. Just keep practicing, eventually it’ll become second nature. You probably have some anxiety related to your dad’s loss of sight via eye intrusion of some sort, so andrew’s suggestion is a great one, desensitize yourself by putting your (clean) finger near and on your eyeball without a contact lens.
just stay calm and dont think about it so much. Its just like every other situation, its only as scary, stressful, awkward, what have you, as you let it be.
Time and patience. Also, try not to look at your finger as you put them in.
Just thinking about this makes my eyes water. Good thing I don’t need contacts or glasses – yet.
The way I was taught is just like SuperMouse’s method, but I look up while I’m putting the lens in, so it ends up below the center of my eye. Once the lens is actually on your eye, then you can look down and it slides into place, but you don’t have to watch your finger coming straight at your eye (which causes the eye-closing reflex).
I’m assuming we’re talking about soft contacts here – if you’ve got gas permeable lenses, this method won’t work – you have to put them straight on your eye without sliding around…
