Why is Vista so bad?

Sometimes I wonder if people aren’t conditioned to think badly about all things Bill Gates/Microsoft, without giving it a fair shake…just because they are the big behemoth company.

Once you use it for a few weeks the constant nagging from the system that you’re doing something wrong stops showing up. It kind of settles in after a month or so of use. It’s fine for the everyday user.

Didn’t someone do a test, hiding the operating system and people gave it almost ten stars? Oh yeah, these guys.

….I should also add that I went from Windows 98 to Vista in 2007

….and from dial up (yes you read that correctly) to high speed just 4 months ago.

So my standards are pretty low :)

Because you don’t get the warm fuzzy feeling from working with it that you get when working with open source software ;-)

And also because you don’t really have a choice of not buying it when you’re buying a computer.

Oh, and I guess there’s only very limited customization options.

Yeah, those are all pretty superficial, but then again: I’ve hardly used it at all ;-)

My new laptop has Vista, and it seems fine to me.

I have never used it. But from what I’ve heard Windows 7.0 is getting pretty good reviews.

@Vincentt: You can downgrade Vista to XP when you buy a computer.

also vista is a hardcore resources whore. You need at least 2GB of ram just to have it run somewhat smoothly and not lag all the time. On any other OS 2GB ram would be pretty damn fast.

One reason I hate Vista is because they cut a lot of features they had promised would be in the final release. Just like with the video game Spore, I had high hopes back when it was being discussed and demoed, but as development continued, the product just started rotting and becoming this putrid disgusting mess of a result.

Simply put, there’s no reason for me to like Vista. XP (and even Windows 2000 for that matter) work golden on my hardware setup. Why should I upgrade to something that has worse driver support as well as being a resource hog? It’s a downgrade from where I am!

Windows 7 doesn’t look any better since it’s built off Vista’s core. As far as I’ve seen, one of their biggest draws for it is the multi-touch support, but I don’t have the need nor desire to start programming for one. Oh, and the whole “Windows 7 beta eats your mp3s” thing didn’t inspire any confidence either.

-they moved everything
-UAC (User Access Control, or something) extreamly anoying
-It uses 1GB of ram always… I think something is wrong if I see it below that
-I never get a chance to see my CPU running at anything blow 5%
-The dock is unnecisary
-Media Center won’t go away
-Can record ‘line out’ anymore (that might just be the vista driver for my card, it does work with xp)
-laggy at times (probably because something stupid is running in the backgournd, like defrag or indexing…)
-They broke searching for files… seriosly.. have fun finding that file, i dare you
-Aero UI is funny, what a hog, and it eat your battery too
-Win + tab… may I just laugh
-Personalizing your computer. They put walpaper, screensaver, visual style, etc into their own windows… Why can’t they all be in one window like before, I don’t like digging layers down to get to what I want
-BSOD, Black Screen of Death
-Slow file copying and deleting…
-Annoying confirmations to alter files in the “program files” folder
-It might randomly decide that your programs aren’t safe and won’t let them start up when you turn on the computer
-New start menu list style is ridiculous.

Vista treats you like noob… even if you are an admin, it doesn’t trust you.

@dynamicduo The windows 7 mp3 thing was with Windows Media Player (I don’t know why anyone would use that), but I guess they fixed that. And it is Beta for a reason.

I don’t know what to think of win 7 yet. I’m still with XP… it simply works.

@TheBox193 the BSOD is so annoying. My step dad has vista on his comp and everything you try and open an application, the whole screen flashes black for a couple seconds.

Nothing wrong with vista.
seriously, I have had problem with it, but nothing outside the realm of reasonable (as in these problem occur on XP and mac on occasion, like programs crashing)
I disagree with thebox on the search issue, mainly because when he explained why he hated it to me I couldn’t fathom when I would ever care about the problem he explained.
Also, everyone who dislikes vista nagging them all the time, just turn it off :D

Try running Vista, with a little bit of configuration, on a good computer. The main problem is having it run on sh*tty computers.

RAM is so cheap right now that any modern computer should have at least 2gb

@Eambos and @TheBox193, when I bought the laptop the guy who sold it to me said not to get any less than 3Gb on a computer with Vista. That must be why it hasn’t been a problem for me. It is good to know he wasn’t scamming me.

I’ve used all, OS X, linux, win2k, winxp, vista, and am currently running windows 7 beta on the main computer.

I would have to say OS X is my favorite, xp just works, vista is annoying with all the pop ups but really never had any other complaint about it. and windows 7 is a huge improvement from vista.

Windows 7 is promising in that it simplifies everything xp style, and has a newer feel.
The beta is really great and drivers were easy to find using the liveupdate. Its pretty much what vista should have been.

I would say the mains reason people hate vista is b/c of the constant pop ups and resource hog resulting in a slower computer compared to xp equivalent.

@nexstar5 Interesting insight. Do you think the ‘new feel’ and new organization of windows 7 will deter people from windows 7?

@critter1982 – I don’t want Windows XP either. I just want a cheaper computer, so I’ll install an OS myself and not pay for Windows, thanks ;-) (Hey, I’m Dutch!)

I got 4gb Corsair (namebrand) ram for $15 after MIR. Even a Scrooge could afford that.

Clearly, I am not a techie, but I don’t have pop ups w/ Vista that everyone keeps referring to….?

I think windows 7 will be good for beginners as its pretty like vista and has a good interface that is simplistic.
All the reviews thus far for windows 7 have had great praise, so I think with more people trying it and liking it, it will catch on better than Vista.

@Snoopy: If you’re not installing a lot of programs, customizing things constantly, etc. you won’t get nearly as many pop-up dialogs asking for your permission. I fiddle with my pc quite a bit, so I went through about two months of serious annoyance before it stopped bothering me constantly.

@asmonet Ahhhhh. Well that makes sense….I am not inclined to fiddle too much.
