Is there a difference in the upward nod and the downward nod?
I was just noticing in Mtl_Zach’s question there were some people saying they just gave “nods” when acknowledging or greeting someone. I always thought the upward nod was more of a positive/personal “Whats up?” and the downward nod was just a non personal gesture maybe from back in the day when people tipped their hats.

Upward = “S’up, dude?”
Downward = “G’day to you, sir”
When I do upward, I have to tilt my eyes down, so it feels like I’m looking down on them. I like down more.
@Mtl_zack : I like down more too, sometimes I will do both in the same motion. (I will start up then go down)
Downward might show more respect/humility.
A downward nod shows civility and recognition of a fellow person.
On the other hand, an upward nod shows far more familiarity.
I read this question and have for the last minute sat here practicing both. I prefer the downwards nod.
do you raise your eyebrows when you do the “downwards nod”?
I don’t no. After my little practice session i came to the conclusion that it takes more effort to to an upward nod, so i just do the downwards nod, but with no eye brow raise.
A downward nod has always felt more like a gentle “hello” gesture where as an upward nod is more of an aggressive “What’s up”. Or even a “what! I didn’t hear you“or “what you looking at!?”. It’s very rare I give stranger’s an upward nod. Someone commented that sometimes they do both in the same motion upward & then downward… I hate when that happens…lol! Honesty the very few times someone has done that it always leaves me with a weard confused awkward feeling that lasts for a gew moments… ha,ha. Don’t do both at the same time.. that’s so weird when it happens lol. Just pick one. I’ve noticed the biggest problem with nodding upward at strangers is that it usually follows with a, “what’s up” or ‘how’s it going”, & sometimes strangers take it as an invitation to start talking to you and share there whole life story lol. I don’t recall this ever happening with a downward nod… Best advice I can give is experiment with it, nod at strangers & then talk to them lol.
