Who has a delicious, serve it hot, British recipe?

Asked by benchaos (64points) January 22nd, 2009

Hosting a British themed party potluck. Since we’re hosting, I want to serve something hot, and involve some sort of meat. I’ve been crawling the web, but was just curious to see if anyone had any suggestions that they’ve tried or recommend.

It could be an appetizer, casserole, pasta, pretty much anything. I just don’t want to roast a rack of lamb or make a shepherd’s pie.

Looking for something that is relatively quicker, and preferably doesn’t need a prune demi-glaze.

Hahaha.

Toad in the hole! I think it’s fairly British. Being from Britain myself I’m not too sure on what the stereotypes are like.

I always heard that “delicious” and “British recipe” don’t belong in the same sentence.
(How about Fisn and Chips?)

@Judi You take that back right now. :P

Cumberland sausages with mashed potato and onion gravy?

c_gunningham's avatar

Yeah take that back, us brits have a bad reputation and undeserved (I heard americans put marshmallows on potato and syrup on everything but hey). just look here

@johanspun I like the idea, but I don’t know about it for the party.

Steak & ale pie. Or maybe chicken & mushroom? Both are hearty meals. Easy to make, taste great & you can do the little ‘leaves’ on top to make the presentation look good! ;)

@dik2312, Steak Ale and Stilton the stilton makes all the difference.

Chip butties? Oh, the starchy, carby goodness of chip butties.

@dik2312 @c_gunningham by request of the honored guest, I promised no savory pies, forgive me, I should have been more specific when I just said “Shepherd’s.”

Venison with red wine sauce and roast vegetables here

@johanspun – Oh, thank you! Dinner sorted! I haven’t had Cumberland sausages in AGES.

I know you said no savory pies, but for those who are otherwise interested (or just to negate the belief that there is no delicious British food) I’ve made this awesome recipe from the BBC web site for Beef and Ale Pie many times. It can easily be adapted to individual servings in smaller tureens or even ramekins if you like.

Or there’s Very Posh Bangers on a Bap!

@c_gunningham Stilton sounds awesome! I’m definately gonna give that a spin soon.

@Dave I’m pretty sure thats the recipe I used the first time I made it!

Go for the ironic value of Chicken Tikka Masala.

Eat Indian food in London, take a steaming hot crap and you’ve got a meal that rivals the best British recipe ever devised.

johanspun's avatar

Oh dear, @steve6, do you really consider London to be the only place you can get food in England?

PupnTaco's avatar

@steve6: when were you last in England and where did you dine?
