What makes you sad?

Asked by Bluefreedom (22947points) January 23rd, 2009

There was a question asked recently about what made people happy so I thought I’d see what it was like on the other end of the spectrum. I’m not asking this to depress anyone or darken the usually bright mood on Fluther. I’m just curious.

Having other people’s decisions forced upon me, without consideration for the impact on me.

People hurting other people. (people will get hurt, that’s just life.. but I’m talking about people who REALLY hurt people.. ruin lives.. for their own personal gain.. that makes me sad)

Any form of child abuse. Just the thought of it is enough to bring me to tears.

Man as if I wasn’t feeling down enough today as it is… you’ve made me think of this you fiend!

Oh man, I’m second guessing my decision to ask this question. If it helps any, I just want to say that, from the bottom of my heart, I lurve everyone that is participating in my question.

Letting my problems take over my rational mind makes me sad.

When I realize there is nothing I can do to change the past
or watching my life and understanding its not going to last.
It breaks my heart to see an unloved child
and its miserable to think of a beautiful woman who has never truly smiled.
A lovely but depressing song that covers death
or even a helpless beast taking his last breath.
I get sad and lonely every night shes not here
and when I think about a life alone I start to shed a tear.

Hatred in all its forms.

When my children cry.
When people are rude.
When my husband isn’t appreciated for the hard work that he does.
When my coffee is weak.
When it doesn’t snow (after the weatherman said it would!).
When my parents have health issues.
When a person is disrespected for having a difference of opinion.

Suffering. Sadness and fear in children.

Leaving my family, after I go to visit.
Fighting with my boyfriend.
Thinking about my past and my relationship with my mother.

Abused children & animals, yes. That definately tops my list, too.

Personally, our beautiful 18 year old granddaughter is making our family sad right now. She went through a terribly traumatic situation almost 2 years ago & she’s never recovered from it. She’s now making some terrible choices because of it, & it beaks my heart.

I feel sad when I think how much of the claptrap I was taught in my childhood I allowed to hold me back as an adult. I wasted a lot of time as an adult trying to “be good” and gain my family’s approval when they weren’t going to give it to me anyway. Nothing I did would’ve been good enough, and I didn’t figure that out for years and years.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@aprilsimnel…that is sad. I’m sorry.

Losing my father. My family falling apart. Being alone after I have a busy day. Having no one to talk to or be with in my free tie. Disappointing myself. Seeing other’s people sadness, through the way they communicate and knowing you can’t do anything for any one person, because ultimate change comes from within. Knowing so many people are suffering. Seeing an animal or child get hurt (verbally for children too). Seeing parents treat their kids wrongly because they weren’t prepared to have children. Thinking of how it’s impossible to get things back from the past. Feeling like I won’t being able to fulfill my dreams because of monetary issues. Not knowing what I want to do in life or whether I will succeed at what I choose to do.

Shit, a lot of things make me sad.

@jbfletcherfan : Im sorry to hear that you are having family problems… I really wish everything sorts out. Try to make your granddaughter see her mistakes by herself.. sometimes at that age is hard to listen.
Dead makes me sad. I sometimes wonder how I would feel if someone close to me died and I cry just thinking about it. Dishonesty makes me sad. Any form of abuse is on top of my list as well. I read this book, ” A child called It”, which is all about children abuse, and I couldnt stop crying until I was done with it.

@jbfletcherfan – What you’re going through is sad. She knows you’re there for her, I’m sure.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@aprilsimnel & @May2689, thank you so much. Yes, she & I are very close. She took her first semester of college close to us & she stayed here a lot. You’re right, the trouble with this age is that they think we adults know nothing. They have to find their own way themselves & that road has many bad detours along the way sometimes. I think with grandkids it’s even harder than with your own kids. I feel powerless to do anything. Thank you for your sweet posts. :-)

Just getting home from my friends house who just lost her husband and has two small children, one of which was crying “I want daddy” all day. It makes me sad but also very thankful for all I have.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

OMG, I can’t imagine. How horrible.

May2689's avatar

Yes that is so sad….

When I was in the Army in South Korea for a year and a half in 1988–1989, I came home to find out that my older brother went through a traumatic divorce and was cleaned out financially by his wife, my younger brother had spent a year in rehabilitation for drug abuse, and one of my grandparents had died.

My parents didn’t want me to know all this because they thought the bad news would adversely affect my military career while I was so far from home. Arriving home to find out all of the news in one fell swoop was very sad for me.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Bluefreedom, geez, I’d have been pissed to find out all of that all at once upon getting home. Didn’t it make you mad? I mean, after all, that’s family stuff that you should have been told.

Bluefreedom's avatar

Yes, I felt initial anger upon returning but I was more depressed and shocked and sad than anything else and that kind of pushed all the anger to the wayside.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

Yes it would. It’s too bad you weren’t able to be there. They were all times when you all needed to be together. I’m sorry.

I know that my biggest dream will never come true. I can’t make it happen. that makes me really sad. oh and today is my b-day, and the person I love the most won’t call me to say “happy birthday” because he doesn’t even know I exist.
the party is over, and even though I had a great time, I am sad now. because I can’t say any of the things I want to say. yes I know I’m a freak. but I’m sad too.
