If you won a record amount in the lottery?

Asked by cage (3125points) January 23rd, 2009

Would you let the press get involved?
And who would you tell first?

In England when you win the lottery, Camelot (the company who host it) amongst other options, give you the choice of whether you let the press know it was you who won.

Absolutely not….no I would not want the press to know. I always think the people who do that are either narcissistic, dumb or both…..

Fuck the press, the less people who know the better. And either my girlfriend or my parents would know first, followed by a few close friends and probably fluther.

Yeah! (*#$Y# the press!

Why would I want the press and everyone else to know about my windfall? I like to keep things private myself. Nice to know you at least have an option in England.

Snoopy's avatar

@jonsblond I believe that option is available in the USA as well…its just that most oddly opt not to do this…

jonsblond's avatar

@snoopy Did not know that. Wow, what a bunch of dumbasses! ;)

If I won record lottery, I would give it to the poor.
Now imagine me when I am 34, sitting on a couch, single, with a grease-stained white T-shirt, and get the lucky lottery ticket and sayin “hellz I’m goinz to Vegaz and drinkinz the nightz awayzz!!”
I will try to give it away, though, whatever my mind says. Poor people shouldn’t be living the way they are. And the most unhappy people were rich! mansions scare me

I would not want the press to know, although I think the lottery corporation here has a stipulation that you have to let them publish your name, and I think your picture, if they want to. Not sure how difficult that would be to get out of though.

I would hire a stand in and then let the press know. Give the press the run around for once.

I think in NY, you will get press regardless; it’s a state-run lottery. I’d go for a 50s look for when the cameras showed up, with big sunglasses and a headscarf.

Huge lottery winnings would mean that I finally had enough money to use the financial planner of one of my ex-bosses. And I’d call him.

First people I would tell would be the parents. @aprilsimnel I’m pretty sure when you go to the lottery commission they ask if you would like to remain anonymous. Yet it also may depend on what type of lottery game you were playing.

I would NOT let the press know. I would claim the prize as a trust to remain anonymous.
I would only tell my husband, father and siblings thats it!

Here in Cali I believe you don’t get a choice, it is all public record anyhow. With insane money like that I could vanish for months with no one being able to find me anyhow, so let them hunt.
