When did children's cartoons become so funny?

For me it started with Spongebob and Tokyo Pig. Now, with my five year old, I’ve been exposed to Chowder, Flapjack, and The Mighty Bee. All I can say is WOW.
Random quote from Chowder: “It smells like kim-chee around here.”

No idea when it happened, perhaps it’s always been this way.
Hilarious quote from Fairly Odd Parents (translated from Dutch):
Timmy is experimenting with many different flavours of lemonade. After having tried a lot, he still hasn’t found a delicious flavour.
<Wanda> Maybe you need to try something more sweet.
Cosmo drenches his sock in a glass of lemonade.
<Wanda> I said sweet, not feet!
<Cosmo> Oh, I thought you said “drench your sweaty sock in a glass of lemonade”!
xD
OK, I guess that’s in the category “it’d be funny if you were there” :P
They’ve always been that way to a certain degree. Perhaps you’ve just aged into the irony?
What I’m finding really interesting is Adult Swim On Demand being sponsored by the US Navy. My daughter had it on the other night. The ads are really interesting.
I was shocked to discover one day that Phineas and Ferb has fully developed plot lines and witty writing!
Remember Rocko’s Modern Life? That was early-mid 90s, right? I’d say kids cartoons have been funny for grownups starting from then.
I acutally miss that show. :(
@aprilsimnel…Lurve for Rocko. Heifer killed me. And Filbert was a hoot.
“cats and turtles living together…that’s just not right”
Yeah, I knew something was up when the restaurant was called Chokey Chicken. ::snerk!::
Flapjack might be the best animated show ever. Rocko’s Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy are great too.
Really, Really Big Man urging you to, “Gaze into my nipples of the future!”
If you think back to the old Bugs Bunny cartoons, and even the Flintstones, there was a lot of comedy for the grown-ups in those, too.
@augustlan…I know. The original Looney Tunes were meant to be for adults and Fred and Barney used to advertise cigarettes.
Btw, don’t you just love the character the bronze kneecap: He is often shown sticking out his knee cap saying “Don’t make me use this”.
I love Fairly Odd Parents. But my hands down favorite is Angry Beavers. I just love Norbert and Daggett and wrote lots of letters when they were taken off. They took off Angry Beavers, and left on Catdog. Lame.
I love spongebob, fairly odd parents, angry beavers (sadly missed) phineas and ferb. I can’t stand chowder. I make my daughter turn the channel if it comes on.
Nothing is a better expletive than “Oh, Spoot.”
Chowder is AWESOME. Radda radda radda, radda, radda radda. Ya know? Flap jack is great too. But IMO old cartoons were much better angry beaver, ren and stimpy, ahhh real monsters, rockos modern life, earthworm jim, freakazoid, Kablaam! and so many more. Ahhhh i miss my childhood.
What made all of those above listed shows so great is the fact that they are able to incorporate jokes that are both funny for kids and adults. Theres some stuff in rockos modern life that just makes you question how the hell it even got on tv in the first place, but its great because the jokes are crafted in a way that, if your young, you’ll just miss the joke entirely.
spooty spoot head
Ahhh! Real Monsters lurve! Among many many others.
I really like the Rocko’s episode where he takes the giant pill. Freaking great!
im pretty partial to the one where mrs bighead tries to seduce Rocko :P. Especially when she gets out the spanish fly LOL.
When Filbert gets the fortune cookie that reads:
Bad luck and misfortune will infest your pathetic soul for all eternity
I’m Mr. Lucky!
@uberbatman – I hated Earthworm Jim (or Superworm Jim as he was called in the Netherlands) when I was a kid. There’s all these cartoons I think I’d love now that I’m older :P
Cow and Chicken, anyone? SUPERCOW, grumblegrumble chicken! And what about Dexter’s Laboratory :). But Dee-Dee blows his experiments, mmmmmery (yeah I was little, how am I supposed to understand English?).
@Vincentt The theme song to cow and chicken was my wake up alarm this morning :P
momma had a chicken, momma had a cow… dad was proud he didnt care how!
Pa pa, pa pa padada, pa padada da – COW – pa pa, pa pa padada, pa padada da – CHICKEN – pa pa, pa pa padada, pa padada da – COW AND CHICKEN!
A lot of cartoons now have adult references. When I was younger, and in Spongebob they’d go “Nosforocto!” I’d be like, ‘huh?’
but now I’m like… Wow, no wonder I didn’t get it.
I didn’t know how it was spelled… don’t hurt me!
thats not really an “adult reference” , now mrs bighead giving rocko spanish fly,THAT IS lol
@uberbatman Yeah, not exactly, but not one that 6 year olds that watch Spongebob would neccesarily understand.
@aprilsimnel LOVE Rocco’s modern life, though it isn’t on anymore because it is from the 90s.
Stupid shows like Family Guy do not have to have dirty jokes to be funny.
IR Baboon big star of cartoon…I Am Weasel.
Powerpuff Girls are pretty goshdarn cool as well. Mojo Jo Jo kills me.
i want a buttercup tatoo
@Blondesjon ever see Powerpuff Girls Z? (its the anime version of PPG, its quite comical)
@Blondesjon – omg, Him was awesome. And Mojo Jojo!
Curse it!
yeaaaaaa uhhh Him was always a character that made me question. “How the hell are they allowed to get away with this in a children’s cartoon?” lol
i think the fairly odd parents, foster’s home for imaginary friends, and spongebob are the funniest cartoons ever. i love when they make references to things young kids wouldn’t get, like in one episode of spongebob they said something about “I AM THE LIZARD KING” and i really appreciated it. also, foster’s usually makes references to other stuff in the titles of each episode.
sometimes spongebob makes some more um, mature references though. when spongebob told patrick that his genius was showing, and patrick is like “WHERE?” and covers his crotch.
My favorite Foster’s was the episode where Kevin McDonald from The Kids In The Hall voiced an imaginary friend who was basically a ball of eyes to a blind boy named Stevie – and he lost his boy!
“Stevie! Stevie! Oh, I lost Steeeevieee!”
It was so sweet when they found each other. And hilarious whenever someone shot off a flash camera.
Speaking of Fairly Odd Parents… I love the references to “your anus”, because in Dutch, “your anus” doesn’t sound like “Uranus” at all :P
Hello, we all forgot about Rugrats! Angelica: “Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jerky!” Now that we are older, the Rugrats Movie Rocks. My Grandpa lived with me for a while before he died and he was always falling asleep. While watching the movie with my then 6 year old son, he said “that’s just like g.p. used to do!” If you have not seen it, or it’s been a while. Check it out with an adult eye… Too Funny!!!
I never thought Rugrats was super-hilarious, but that’s just me.
@mangeons…i’ve seen what you think is funny…meow meow Meow hisss meow!!!
@Blondesjon If you don’t think that’s funny, then you are wrong in the head!
