Grendel, Kiva, Neela, Merah, or if you’re edgy: The Artist Formerly Known as Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis.
Kellycia, Ty Jae, Mcaela (pronounced McKayla), Natalia, Joh’nae (pronounced joh-nay).
Are you looking for interesting spelings, uncommon names, religious names, and/or names generally associated with a certain race?
Congratulations and good luck!
I’d stay away from Grendel; that’s the evil creature’s name from Beowulf, said to be a descendant of Cain.Grendel is often a demon/evil man.
I agree with Perchik, it would also pose problems for your daughter during the brutal elementary years when pre-adolescents tend to tease each other a great deal about their names.
I really like Marina. Yeah, go for that.
Try nymbler.com – it’s a cool site that lets you submit some names you like and then suggests other ones you might also like based on those. A related site is www.babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/ which represents graphically the popularity of different names over the past century or so.
No no. Be very very hip and name her an ancient Biblical name so that she won’t be
mistaken for a child of the generation immediately preceding her own, that is, the generation in which every single godforsaken idiot parent thinks their own child has to
have a name that no one else has, so they make up names they think sound like ethnic names from ethnicities not their own or not anyone’s. give her a break. Call the poor kid
Sarah or Mary or Bathsheba or Sharon or Elizabeth or even, say, SUSAN, which is in its turn some kind of anglicization of Shoshana, see how it goes? Stick to the basics. She’ll thank you for it when she’s 60 and all her friends can be identified as being 60 because they’re all named Grendel.
ILA. Simple, sweet and unusual. (The i is long.)
p.s. Many congratulations. What could be nicer than a new daughter? good for you!
Seven. It’s a beautiful name for a boy or a girl…
…especially a girl.
I’ve always liked Seanan (pronounced Sehn-in)—it’s the Gaelicized version of Shannon. I wouldn’t worry too much about not picking a name that’ll get your kid teased—other kids will find a way to tease about any name.
Try to avoid names that sound like they could be characters in the Lion King.
Magich; I assume that you are pulling our leg. A new baby – what a miracle, and part of that is choosing her name, an intimate and privileged job for you and your partner.
Congratulations.
FWIW, my name is Gail and I have always disliked the hard “G” and the single syllable. Bathsheba always ends up as Sheba and Shoshanna (one of my nieces) as Shosh or Shoshie.
And no names that have people always asking, “Would you plz spell that?” – like Siobhan, pronounced Shevaughn.
I love Megan and Jenna
Friends of ours each named their daughters…Zoe, Emma, Ainsley, Josie and Marina. Those are beautiful names.
Elisa, and Allie were other thoughts of names.
Lily for middle name of one friend’s daughter.
Margo.
Cate, I like of the spelling.
Have fun and congratulations on your new daughter!
Madrigal
Asia
Emma
Or… If you’re a fan of The Office… Flonkerton!
I chose Bean as my daughter lucy’s second name, and she still seems to like that at nearly seven years old. A colleague’s family name is Lander, and I’m really hoping he’ll name a daughter Lunar.
Don’t forget the musicality of combo w. your last name.
All fun aside, let us know what you choose, unless you are too sleep-deprived to write, which would be understandable. (Abigail means father’s love or joy.”
I had the idea recently to name a girl Anastasia and call her Stacy for short. I guess Stacy is probably pretty dated at this point, but that just means it’ll come back faster! Also: Think how awesome it is to have a “fancy” name built right in!
I’d like to apologize for being so nasty about “unique” names.
I’d like to think it was even a little out of character. I even like most of the names (except Grendel) that people have suggested, especially Seven, which I think beautiful. It reminds me of how the Balinese name their kids – essentially, One, Two, Three, Four, and then if a fifth child comes, start over with One. Kids get nicknames to distinguish them from all the other Ones, Twos, Threes and Fours. Very orderly. If I were born into that kind of culture, and if the system were slightly different, I would hope to be the seventh and get that cool name.
Make something up…and be sure that everything sounds good as one long, whole, 3-part name (if you’re giving her a middle name, that is). I’ve had a few friends w/no middle name. Kinda strange. I wanted to call my daughter Cali, but didn’t want that to be her entire first name (still not sure why). So, I made up “Caliana” – Cali (as in, short for California, but in no way related) + ana (ah-nuh). And no, Caliana does NOT actually look like it shoudl be said Cali-Anna – if so, I would have spelled it Calianna. Geez people! :) Needless to say, pick something you won’t spend her whole life correcting, like me, when people blurt out something like Catalina (but I’m convinced those people are illiterate). Her middle name is Vae (vay) – and would also make a nice first name. I think that’s the longest explanation I’ve ever given on what I named one of my kids! Anywho, it sounds nice together – Caliana Vae…and I still managed to give her my middle initial. A touch like that never hurts either, and you have options even if you don’t want to pass along an entire name.
Kira is my favorite and the one I’d love to change my name to.
Kaeli, Ayla, Owlen
Not Grendel. Please, not Grendel. Gwendolyn maybe. Gwen isn’t so bad.
Please name her something short enough that won’t be shortened into something ugly or common.
I like old-fashioned feminine names: Julia, Corinna, Laura, Lorna, Rebecca, Isabel, Victoria, Beatrice, Diana, Charlotte, Cecelia, Arden
Mia, it’s hip and stylish and it looks and sounds great!
I have always loved my name Chakra. Also the name Ella.
Bengal and Gabrielle.
