Has anyone read "The Taking" by Dean Koontz?

I just walked into my bedroom and found the book in pieces. Darn dogs! I had about one more chapter to read. I was actually not very happy with the way the story went and put off reading it for sometime, but I need to know: Were the dogs working for the children or against them? What happened to the children?

It blows. It’s a phoned in cop out that made me angry I even bothered to read the book.
