Anyone want to suggest a new font for augustlan's A?
See this thread for how this question came about. I was toying with Acadian or Argonaut (example) for augustlan—elegant with a touch of whimsy—like she is.

Ayyy…
sorry
Give examples of the A, people! Hmm, the A in Wingdings is interesting, shadling21
I like Ansy Pants from Marina’s example.
@uberbatman: bad answer!
Hoefler’s “Gotham” font was Obama’s official typeface – a very clean sans serif, crisp and friendly.
I do like the Argonaut one, that keeps the elegance and authority, but gives it a softer edge.
In order of my favorites for her, I would pick:
Monotype Corsiva
Amienne
Freestyle Script
Planet Benson 2
Tempus Sans ITC
Magneto Bold
Harrington
Of the a’s I like anagrams. Squirls are nice. I wish we could change fonts in iPhone.
Whichever she likes best, of course!
I always thought Auggies A looked just fine to me. So do her B’s.
Hey, when did you see her Bs?
@uberbatman: I suspected as much. Still, I must practice due diligence in speaking out against the horror of Comic Sans.
I’m really liking Argonaut. Go with that, definitely. It’s so pretty. :)
< < thought that it went without saying that Comic Sans is always a joke.
How does it work when you download a font? How do you use it after you download it and extract the files from the zipped folder?
That was a good one Zach.
Baskerville and Bookman cracked me up.
I like it just the way it is. But I guess if change is on the way, I’d go with Holiday Ranch.
But yeah, I like it now too. :)
@mangeons, put it in your ‘Fonts’ folder and then it is there to choose from when you create a document, such as in Word.
Caution, though: if you send a file or message to someone who does not have the font installed, it’ll go to a default font on the other person’s computer and come out looking weird.
@Mtl_zack, that video made the rounds of all the publications professionals I know and was a universal hit. I watched it about 6 times and liked it better each time. Brilliant!
@Mtl_zack Loved it! While the spirit of Comic Sans may be noble, the font itself is an abomination whose spread should be avoided. (Am I sounding like Bookman Old Style?)
Harrington is very nice!
I also like
Antsy Pants
Broadway
Odalisque
Tropicana
Thanks for all the suggestions! So far, I’m liking Marina’s Argonaut and Fireside’s Monotype Corsiva examples. Now…can anyone make me a new icon with either or each of those? (My daughter made my current one for me, as I have no clue how to do it!)
< < votes for Harrington… smart and whimsical.
Vote: Monotype Corsiva.
If I don’t already have that font, I’m getting it now.
@johnpowell Lurve to you! Of course, you had to do Comic Sans after that thread. Actually, it doesn’t look bad in a single letter rendering.
Seeing them as icons, I like the Monotype Corsiva best followed by Harrington, and then Argonaut.
@augustlan Now you have a whole wardrobe of avatars!
@Marina We should make her seven; one for each day.
I can’t believe that nobody went for Planet Benson 2 : )
Had to throw some crazy ones in there, not sure how Tempus Sans ITC even made the cut…
I’m seconding monotype corsiva.
Thank you johnpowell! I appreciate your work on my behalf. I’m off to play with them, and pick my favorite.
I like that Snell Roundhand, too
I saved those avatars as pics on my computer, and Fluther won’t accept them! What have I done wrong :’(
I bet it won’t take png files.
I’m headed into a meeting but can convert them later to jpegs or gifs.
It takes png files.. I saved mine the same way I saved hers. Mayby something in the upload-download-upload cycle screwed with them.
I tested them as a png and they worked.. But here is a zip of them (minus Comic Sans). I’m sporting Comic Sans now. There can only be one!!
@johnpowell After all that effort, you should definitely get first dibs!
ack comic sans ack ack ack
But @fireside and @johnpowell, Harrington is definitely exceptional. I want to add that to my ~580 fonts right away. If I were Aug, I would choose that, but I think we have different tastes.
Psst. Fonts. They’re free, legal and over 21. Now woudja like to buy an “O”?
Oooh, I don’t like the rest of Harrington nearly so well as the A. Capital A is usually the best letter in any font.
In fact, A is just an all-around superior letter. We should write everything with A’s and not bother with the rest.
@Jeruba – A aaaaa. A aaaaa aa aaaaa aa aaaa aaaaaa aa aa aaaa aaaa A’a, aaaaaaaaa.
i agree. I think it would be much better if we just used A’s, seriously.
@fireside, write a few more of those and you can start sending them to Russia and Bulgaria as spam. It’ll drive ‘em nuts.
I’m still not sure how to do it. How would I save it to my “fonts” folder? And then I could just choose it from the drop down list in Microsoft word?
@mangeons – Using Windows?
To install a font, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type the following command, and then click OK:
%windir%\fonts
3. On the File menu, click Install New Font.
4. In the Drives box, click the drive that contains the font that you want to add.
Note The floppy disk drive is typically drive A or drive B. The CD drive is typically drive D.
5. In the Folders box, click the folder that contains the font that you want to add, and then click OK.
6. In the List of fonts box, click the font that you want to add. To select more than one font at a time, press and hold the CTRL key while you select each font.
7. Click to select the Copy Fonts To Fonts Folder check box. The new font is saved in the Windows\Fonts folder.
8. Click OK.
This assumes installation from an external medium instead of a download.
When somebody sends me a font as an attachment, I just use Windows Explorer to put it in my Fonts folder.
@mangeons – using Jeruba’s method, click on the start menu, open the control panel, then open the fonts folder, Word should load it from the folder.
Okay, well I can’t do it. D: Too bad.
@mangeons, what are you starting with? What’s your source?
@mangeons Ask your dad to do it for you! He knows how, I’m sure :)
For anyone who isn’t aware, mangeons is my daughter.
@augustlan, I missed that! It seems to me that unless you’re on fluther around the clock, you miss crucial connections. Hi there, augustlan’s daughter.
Speaking of A’s and fonts, I have often marveled at how many variants, some exceedingly bizarre, on your basic unvarnished ‘A’ we can still recognize as A’s. I have pondered the essential A-ness of A and thought about all the letters that same way: which are the indispensable, nonnegotiable elements of each and which things you can distort or even omit and still identify the letter. Interesting question, isn’t it?
@Jeruba – It is!
I’ll look at letters and wonder, “Why that shape? Why not another shape?” How did someone go from seeing waves, for example, to assigning it as “M” and further assigning the sound “mmmmm” to it? And then getting everyone in the society to agree that M = “mmmmm”. How does that work?
@Jeruba Don’t feel bad. There was no big announcement, as she wanted to be her own person on Fluther for a while before being associated with me. She is my second daughter to join Fluther! Flyawayxxballoon is my oldest daughter. The third is only 11, so she’ll have to wait a few years :)
Oh, the history of the alphabet is another fascinating topic. The letter A is one of the oldest and comes from a pictograph of the head of a horned animal (an ox? I forget), turned sideways. The M, as I recall, comes from the Egyptian pictograph for water. I used to know the stories of many of them. It was (IIRC) the Hebrews who came up with the brilliant idea of spelling words instead of just drawing them.
@augustlan, well, they’re both doing very nicely! You must be very pleased and proud.
I am…they are good kids :)
As long as no one else calls me “augustlan’s daughter”, I’m fine. And remember? He’s “not” a computer wiz?
@augustlan‘s daughter – that’s so cute! sorry, just had to do it
I don’t like being compared to my mother. D:
No, @mangeons, no comparison! Just an association. And one made with a smile because your mother is held in considerable affection in these parts.
I know. I feel so… small in the Fluther community compared to her!
well, when you go hiking, you can run circles around her and make her jealous : )
i could cover her in bruises just by poking her :)
@mangeons, it looks like you’re the one who’s making the comparisons, darlin’. When you stop, no one will be.
@mangeons Don’t worry…you’ll come into your own :)
I lurve you.
<< Ta-da! I went with JohnPowell’s Monotype Corsiva icon. I still needed my daughter’s help to convert it to a file type Fluther would accept!
It looks nice!
Fluther should have accepted jp’s image.
I know it should have, but it didn’t. It kept rejecting it, and then telling me it only accepts x,y,z types which included what I was trying to submit! Very frustating. :(
