Is life too short?

Asked by Blondesjon (34000points) January 29th, 2009 from iPhone

I see this phrase bandied about on Fluther alot. It got me to thinking…

If it is too short, what is the right amount of time?

If you could double your lifespan at the cost of randomly losing one of your senses halfway through would you?

Would immortality eventually become boring?

I’d say life is too short, to hold grudges, and to hate, to worry about trivial things etc. But it’s what you make of it. If you can enjoy yourself, take the odd risk now and then and really just go for it, then life shouldn’t be too short!

i think the good times are too short…. if and when i make it to my 80s im sure i will be ready to go, but if i could stay in my 20s forever i would.
i certainly dont want to be around if i cant take care of myself

I agree with @tennesseejac, the good times are way too short. I want to be able to grow old and look back at my life and feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction knowing that I did everything I wanted to do. I definitely don’t want to stay around if i’m not self-sufficient. I don’t want to be put into a nursing home!

I definitely also wouldn’t want to double my lifespan, unless they could guarantee everyone else I know and love could live that long and live healthy.

I have felt as if time is really accelerating in the last couple of years, and I don’t like it.

I think that life derives its meaning from the juxtaposition between having a significant number of opportunities to change the course of your life and the fact that your actions do have consequences.

If there was more time, you’d lose sight on the fact there are consequences. If there was less time, you’d get frustrated that those consequences are inescapable.

That said, I think that our minds are wired to believe this in the end. If we had 300 year life spans, we would probably think the same of that. Similarly, if we had 5 year life spans, it would be the same.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that, assuming you live to old age, the amount of time you have is right for you, no matter how long it is.

Years seem to go by at the speed of light, but most days seem to drag…insipidly…uhhh.

Great Caesar’s ghost, life is totally too short, unless you are doing life and got there in your teens. To some with disabilities it might especially if you are dependent on others to do 95% or more of everything for you, that could get frustrating. Here in the US I believe life is way too short because you really don’t have the time to do all that is available. If you want to be a doctor by the time you go through pre med, medical school, do your internship, then become an attending and master a specialty you are in your 30s or later. If you are in pro sports by the time you really get good unless you were some young phenom and become a seasoned pro they are ready to boot you out of the league; you are too old and too high priced for any team to be interested. There is not enough time to travel to all the interesting spotson the globe unless you are rich or was the children of world travelers. Even if you spent all your time traveling you would not be able to get to half of them by the time you were too old to travel or enjoy it to the fullest.
