Have you heard about the immortal jellyfish?

Asked by SoapChef (2978points) January 31st, 2009

They are saying they are the Benjamin Buttons of the deep. When stressed their cells transform and age backwards. If given that opportunity would you take it?

No way. Though I suppose either way ends in drooling and diapers.

your question is, if given the chance would i be immortal?

Yeah read it a while ago. Unbelievable! they will swarm the whole sea soon. But again, it seems that they only do that when they are being threaten e.g. lack of food.

Or, is your question on becoming immortal contingent on the whole “under stress” aspect; meaning I could control my aging, even letting myself become old, then reverting again, to any age I choose, and then letting myself age natually again ‘til I chose to revert yet again, so long as I could control my stress? (much more interesting scenario!) because then we have to learn to have absolute control over our emotions, at every age, and if we reverted too young, then perhaps it would be too difficult to control our emotions and we would keep reverting until we were a zygote!

but the short answer is: Yes! Absolutely I would give it a shot! Just have to finally get serious about that Zen meditation or trying to become a Jedi! And I suppose I would never revert to younger than say, 25. (but it would be so damn tempting to be a kid again!!!)

And, of course, if you could control your emotions and age and revert, age and revert, at will, then this would give you great cover over people tracking you & catching on to you (a la “The Man from Earth”), though you’d still have to move/disappear every 40 or 50 years, not to mention abandon your loved ones. But I suppose you could just pretend you died… And you wouldn’t want to let yourself age too much…

<-Just look. Not bad for 47, huh?

this is impossible. i mean, the earth would be REALLY OVERpopulated if this occurs.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@yziabites no, no really its not impossible.

@uberbatman yes, i know the so-called immortal jellyfish ages and reverts. i was talking about us human beings. it wouldn’t be right for us to have the same ability to age and reverts, seeing how much of the planet we occupy and how we wreak havoc on it.
