Great question! I am not a boy, but my mother is very proper in her addressing of things, and she always addresses non-adult boys as “Master” on envelopes and stuff. It looks so hilarious when she writes “Master _____ _____” to address a 5 year old!
P.S. According to Wikipedia, “Master” stops being used at age 13, so according to the Fluther terms and conditions, no one here should still prefer “Master.”
I prefer Mr., unless the lady is a frisky lass and we retire to the boudoir, in which it’s “master”, but by then that term usually comes naturally.
@girlofscience I know Master should be stopped earlier on, but I don’t feel like a Mr yet.
I would be made rather uncomfortable if someone called me master; I’ve never heard it used around where I live, even in conjunction with people under the age of thirteen. I would not, however, feel as uncomfortable as one of my aquantances. Let us just say that his last name is ‘Bateman’.
There is a disassociation here between traditional manners and contemporary convention. Manners, indeed, would account for a young man up to 13 being addressed as ‘Master.’ while it would seem that contemporary style removes any form of address, particularly for children. We are fast moving to the removal of formal address, even for adults. The old school rule of thumb is: If you would call him, ‘Sir,’ then it is ‘Mister.’ If he is too young to be called ‘Sir’ (and he is not a royal), then it is ‘Master.”
