Why is the Twilight series so famous?

Asked by electricsky (825points) February 5th, 2009

When I first read the books I liked them, but I don’t understand the fame they’ve gained. In my opinion, they aren’t that great, and they aren’t any more special than some of the other teen-angsty books I’ve read. So what gives?

I haven’t read them but my wife is completely addicted to them. She’s read the books several times and seen the movie probably 6 or 7 times, going with different people. Her 45 year old aunt loves them, random women she meets in the grocery store see her t-shirt and start gushing about how incredible it is. From the sounds of it it’s a modern day knight in shining armor story and women just fall in love with that guy. I don’t know. It’s definitely not limited to teens though.

You might not be getting any answers because we’ve discussed this at great length here, many times. If you search for Twilight it will bring up the links. You’ll be able to read about the many different thoughts and opinions people here have about the books & movies. Good luck!

they’re famous because middle age women love reading about a pedophile vampire, who doesn’t have sex.

There famous because there amazing books. And no, im not a screaming twilight fan. I really like the book for the plot and how it captivates my interest. The characters are easy to relate to. But when it comes down to it, they are books. People read them to enjoy them. In my opinion, there is no need to over anaylze why people like them. There is also no need to criticize the people that like to talk about there love for the book.

i just read about how Stephen King hammered the author.

Vampires are awesome.

As far as I can tell, the Twilight series has found a very specific entertainment niche (mainly vampires and romance) with a huge audience, and so it’s milking it for all it’s worth. I’m not saying it’s not well written, but I would bet money that if the twist was anything other than vampires, it would have gotten a much different reaction.

The girls who like the series, really like it. They think the story and the writing is great. It has a massive audience among tweens and teens. This has spilled over to their mothers and other women, and even men. It’s a word of mouth phenomenon. It is what it is. There are people who don’t like Harry Potter. There are people who don’t like the Twilight Series.

part of it is that there are people who genuinely like it. part of it is the overall hype that i think makes a lot of people act as if they like it a lot more than they do. i read it when it first came out and thought it was pretty well-written and mildly interesting, but i never got the whole “OMG THIS IS EPIC WRITING.” thing. and i am into vampires. i can use my imagination. however i just never thought it was much more than an average-decent young adult novel. i think teen novels are generally trash, but i have read a handful of wonderful ones. twilight doesn’t make the cut for me. i think of it along the lines of gossip girl.

They really resonate with a certain audience. There are a lot of people out there of all ages who are angsty teenagers at heart, and four books of teenage angst mixed with vampire angst is just what they want to read.

Side note (because I’m rarely ever on topic). If you are against Prop 8 in california, and find what the mormons did detestable. Stephenie Meyer (author of twilight) is not only a mormon, but a tithing member of the church. Many have felt this makes her an acceptable boycott target. This is personally why I have not seen the movie, or read the book.

cwilbur's avatar

Oh, I have not seen the movie or read past the first 40 pages of the book because they suck, but if that can be interpreted as a Mormon boycott, so much the better.

cheebdragon's avatar

@Noon- So you are you boycotting all of these people also???

@cheebdragon
Two things. I do make a distinction between a person who happens to have been born of two mormon parents, and someone who is a practicing mormon who tithes to the church. When you buy a twilight book, Stephenie Meyer gets a portion of what you payed, and the mormon church gets 10% of that. Sure it’s not much, but it is a clear and traceable contribution to the church.

The other thing is that many people on that site are no longer practicing mormons. I’m happy to know that the few that I recognize are not actually practicing mormons and just happen to be children of mormons.

What is the Twilight Series? this shows how much attention I pay to popular cultural phenomenon.

@noon- I don’t understand your logic on this one, she didn’t directly donate money supporting prop 8 (and she obviously didn’t vote on it since she lives in Arizona). She was born and raised in a Mormon community, and tithing has been the normal Mormon tradition for a very long time. I don’t think you realize all of the good things they have done all over the world. btw, I think it’s a stupid religion, and I do think that people should be able to marry who ever they want.

@cheebdragon
I do understand that the Mormon church does some nice things. Hell I’m sure if tried hard enough I could find some nice things that Hitler did. The point is right now the church lied and cheated to get prop 8 passed. This is now not up to debate. They claimed to only donate $2,000 as a church and all the other donations came from their members. But it is now coming out to be something along the lines of $190,000.

As it is now for me, if someone is tithing to the mormon church. They have contributed to this detestable act of the church, and unless they come out publicly against the church they are just as deserving of a boycott.
