Netflix has a system where you rate movies and it will give you suggestions that are like those you rate highly.

Internet Movie Database does something like this at the bottom of the page, when you search a movie or tv show.

Our very own richardhenry has a site called “Salt in Your Popcorn” that does this…

It is private now but he will probably hook you up if you ask with a sexier accent then he has.

Perhaps Google Sets will come in handy as well.

Salt in Your Popcorn has been in development since March last year and is still a little way off, but we’re working hard to make the interface delicious and the technology as best as it can be.

We’re working with a rather interesting recommendation technology company for the algorithmic work, so it’s a really fun project.

In addition to recommending you movies based on the films you’ve seen and what you thought of them, there’s a big emphasis on pairing you up with people who have similar taste to you and sparking discussions so you can talk about the things you like and get real, human recommendations.

I’ll add you to my list of people to tell when the next beta (testing phase) is available, if you’re interested?

Here’s the company site: http://fantasticplayroom.com

You are the first person I am following on twitter. I just set up an account.

Sent you a follow request! Why private?

Bri_L's avatar

what do you mean private?

richardhenry's avatar

@Vincentt Currently enjoying Google Sets, this is quite fun. Not really helping me find any related films though.

@Bri_L Look under your account settings (http://twitter.com/account/settings) and make sure “protect my updates” is off. It’s more fun if anyone can read them and follow you, just don’t put anything too personal on there.

@richardhenry Feel free to add me to your list of beta testers – I’d be happy to help. Sounds like a great project!

If anyone is interested, PM me your email address and I’ll invite you to the next private beta. You’ll get discounted tees (when they go into print) and a badge on your profile to say that you helped us build the thing. I’m going to stop plugging now so other people can suggest services. Thanks for the interest!

I will have to add my two cents for Netflix. Obviously this is a subscription service, so if that is not what you want, then RH’s site sounds like a great idea. In case you aren’t familiar, it is set up to feed you recommendations based on movies you have previously rated.

The basic level is not very expensive and may be worth it for the recommendation feature if you are really in to movies.

There are also several links on this site (see left column) that might be of interest:
