Give me a northwoods cabin on a lake with a boat, fireplace and no telephone. This type of vacation makes me feel like the happiest person on the planet.
Do you like an isolated vacation destination or do you prefer a touristy spot with large crowds?
Do you prefer to keep busy or would you rather sit on a beach and read a good book?
What is your ideal vacation?

Isolated. No crowds. Nature playing a big role in the vacation.
No work for a week and I am happy.
One of the best vacations I ever took was a cruise because it was the best deal for the money. I’m not a big crowd person but I do like to visit lots of different locales.
I have several ideal vacations floating around in my head but one that I would always want to take, if I could, would be a round the world cruise with stops at as many ports of call imaginable on almost every continent on the globe.
Greece. Summertime. ‘Nuff said.
Wilderness, wildlife, hiking, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, snorkeling, and practically no one else around.
Swimming in the ocean, lying on the beach reading a book, walking on the sand in the warm sun….sigh Hopefully I’ll be doing that pretty soon on a short vacation
I also like the vacation Blue described. Lots of fun. So for me, warm and sunny and lots of water is what I prefer although I could alternate that with skiing in a chalet once in a while
I like to do a lot usually. If I’ve just been through a big project or a lot of stress I might want some vegging on a beach time, too. But usually I want to do a lot and see a lot and there’s a big plus if there’s water involved.
The lake: beautiful, pristine, perfect temperature for swimming in; a sunfish to sail and reliable winds; beautiful mountains nearby to hike in; a house right on the shore, so you can roll off the porch into the water; and a personal chef who cooks great meals and cleans up afterwards, and I can get a break from that chore without suffering bad food, and without having to go out to a restaurant. This last is very important! I had a personal chef once, but that was in Barbados, and her food left something to be desired.
I have a lot of vacation ideas floating up around in the noggin. I’m weird I could be equally as happy laying on the beach with a good book, walking on the sand, soaking in the sun. Enjoying myself out at night wherever that semi tropical place is! Or I could just as happy be out taking in the local art scene and seeing what makes the city tick, exploring great restaurants and making sure to capture every angle of the new city.
My boyfriend and I were trying to come up with a place to go, our last vacation was a very lets go see everything vacation and less of how about we just relax and do nothing. Suggestions would be fabulous!
@blondie411 I know what you mean. He said ideal so I gave him my very favorite, but I like to alternate with more urban, activity- and history-center vacations too.
Since your was active, what beach? Grand Cayman perhaps. Hawaii if you are on the West Coast.
@Marina We’re on the east (nyc actually), but we’re thinking a beachy vacation! Any excuse for him to see me in a bikini!
@daloon A personal chef would be ideal. My personal chef while on vacation is usually my husband. I think he’d prefer to have one too! For a moment, I felt as if I was at the cabin while I read your post. :) Now back to reality.
My whole family (aunts, uncles, cousins) vacations up in Canada every summer. We have been going 20 years. There are 5 cabins along the lake. No shower, no flushing toilets, just a big ass lake. We bring our boat. There are not many other people on our side of the lake. There are bears, loons, beavers, herons, all kinds of animals. We go fishing and waterski and all that stuff. It’s great.
But my dream vacation includes white sand, hot weather, crystal clear water, and no tourists.
@elijahsuicide I love loons. One of the many reasons why I love a northwoods vacation. I love the fact that families will rent several cabins and spend their vacation together. It’s a tradition we hope to start once our kids move out of the house.
Any place with Paris Hilton.
Virginia Beach…find a spot all by myself in the sand and far away from others, maybe another friend with me. It’d be a windy day but not windy enough to blow sand in your face, not scorching hot, but warm enough for shorts and a shirt. I’d bring my iPod with me, and just relax on a really big towel laid out listening to music.
Italy any time of the year. You can find some great deals on travelzoo. Venice is my favorite. Sitting in a gondola with the love of your life is just breathe taking.
My Grandmother always wanted me to go visit where she grew up in Mullion, Cornwall so I’d like to go there with nothing but the clothes on my back and a credit card with no limit. In fact, I would like to go right now!!!
@loser I think that you should! Send us some pictures. :)
A hike through the Lake District or the Scottish Highlands would be involved. Exploring old towns and homes. Anything with a historical bent, I love.
And I’d like to learn what the dagnabbit “ha-ha” is that Jane Austen kept going on about. I know what it is in theory, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.
St. Pete Beach at Crabby Bill’s on a Wednesday at the upstairs outside bar trying to talk the bartenders into letting me tend bar for awhile. Going back to rented shack on the beach. Sitting in my chair watching the world go by with a margarita in one hand and a nothing in my other hand. (I gave up smoking 4 years ago this week). Getting pleasantly drink with my next door neighbors (whom i just met…every year it’s someone new). We grill Grouper. I get tired of telling the boys next door what it’s like to be a lesbian. I might flash them. I go to my room and sleep with BOB my Slim G. I
I gotta sleep good ‘cause tomorrow I am going to do my annual gig as a docent at the Dali museum.
Isolated with the one I love. Taking it easy. Waking up late and never catching any of the guided tours. Eating at local restaurants. Finding that secluded beach that even the natives have missed. Phones switched off. Nobody even knows we’re there or when we’re coming back. Even we don’t.
@jonsblond I totally agree with your outlook on the perfect vaca. Isolation is the best. I def. would go with a cabin in the woods somewhere, maybe New Hampshire or Vermont. Totally cut off from the world. If I wanted a warmer scene, I def. just head to my family’s condo in FL. It’s in a hole in the wall town along the coast that tourists have typically never heard of. So. Relaxing.
@jonsblond…Any vacation spent with you is my ideal vacation. :)
Cruising with friends. We had, would have, a blast. I really want to cruise the Med, just haven’t swung the time or money yet.
Or, a month in a cottage in the English countryside.
I really would just love to get away with my friends. Just my friends. No bf’s, no parents, no intimidating peers… The ten of us would go away to Europe to experience the history we’ve learned about in our AP Euro classes, speak the languages we spend so many hours trying to learn, and broaden our horizons to an expansion beyond our imaginations. It would give us a chance to just be…. to just live. Of course, a group of 17 year old’s, unsupervised, in a foreign country could lead to some problems, lol, but it would be the most amazing opportunity/vacation…. <staring off into space with a silly little smile, aspiring for the future>
Diving in the azur see some where in caribian see…
Ok, you guys made me think of something else. :^>
I want to go on a great wine tour of the world. Italy, France, Australia, Chile, Argentina, ... even California, Oregon, and Washington. Then as I end my tour I want someone to roll me up to my door in a wheelbarrow with a bottle of local red in my hand. Woo-as they say-hoo. :^>
@cyndyh lol I can picture you in that wheelbarrow, even though I don’t know what you look like.
You got me thinking. I’d do a beer tour; Bavaria, Belgium, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Wisconsin.
As of now, The West part of US.
@jonsblond: Oh the beer tour would be nice, too. I’m still busy with local microbrews and local vineyards so far. :^> My husband and I want to do a Canadian microbrew trip later this year.
As far as the picture goes, short dark hair, jeans and concert t-shirt, I probably lost my shoes by the time I’d be in a wheelbarrow. :^>
I would love to go to Jamaica, Port Antonio! I’ve overheard some friends of mine mentioning the beautiful white sand crystal clear beaches . We could climb beautiful falls that few people go to and go cave exploring and zip lining in the canopy. They are some mysterious tours and adventures you can take in the island and best of all most beaches in Port Antonio are so private and isolated because few people know about them. My friends mentioned frequently finding these white sand beaches totally empty, “no tourist or local”. That gives me kinky ideas for me and my boyfriend!!! I hear they have great food too… The Next vacation Jamaica Here I come!
@Yaime I would love to visit there too. Thanks for answering! Welcome to Fluther! :)

A perfect vacation for many people is to take a cruise to an exotic destination such as Antarctica, China, Thailand, India, Egypt, etc. You can do this while only unpacking once, having dependably good food, great entertainment, interesting shipmates, and a relaxing time. A cruise is really a floating resort that takes you to exciting places to visit.
I love to spend my vacation in Goa & Kerala (India) Beaches. I love these places.
I love mountains. So, my ideal vacation would be in Edinburgh, Scotland in its beautiful cottages.
