Simply put? No. None of my friends have “made it big”.

gailcalled's avatar

Well, Milo has me, or is it the reverse?

MissAnthrope's avatar

Not anyone I would consider a friend. Acquaintance, yes. My mom is friends with Jacques Pepin and I had lunch at his house.. does that count?

gailcalled's avatar

@AlenaD: It depends on the meal. What was the menu?

peyton_farquhar's avatar

Um, I believe my grandmother knew Izhak Perlman. And, um, I went to the same highschool as that guy who wrote The Notebook. So, maybe.

Sparkie510's avatar

I loved the Notebook!

I met Stephen King while skiing at Sugarloaf Maine, but I wouldn’t say he’s a friend, more of an acquaintance. I met Telly Savalas in MA when teaching an art course to the Shriners…ayuh..he was a shriner. may he RIP.

I got Sidney Sheldon’s autograph on one of his bestsellers. My friend Amanda hosts a TV show in Nevada and her sister dated Shawn White (the flying tomato).

Famous? not really…. unless you count politicians. I know a few of them, but I don’t brag about it. teehee.

hmmm…let’s see:

One of my friends (who also played on my last album) is a world-famous classical guitarist that has won many competitions. My manager’s wife is also a very famous violinist. One of my friends is the daughter of Czech chess champion Jan Smejkal (one of the few people to beat Kasparov). A guy that played on my first album was a pop star in the 80s. Video-clips and stuff like that, but not really world famous. Though their singer went on to become n MTV presenter. I’ve met some famous people of course (mainly musicians) but they wouldn’t qualify as “friends”. One of my best friend’s little sister is quite a well-known actress, though again not an Oscar nominee or anything. And my cousin’s son has played soccer for Newcastle United and the Australian national team. Oh and I had a good friend (though we’re not that close anymore) who was a weightlifting champion, lots of Olympic medals, world records and so on (I think he still holds the world record in his category).

I could easily go religious with this but I might get pummeled with tomatoes.

MissAnthrope's avatar

@gailcalled – It was fairly casual. We had roasted chicken, head cheese (that Jacques made), salad, raw clams, crusty bread, and homemade cured pork tenderloin rolled in herbs (sort of like a salami).. along with wine, of course. :)

Sparkie510's avatar

@Jack79 – so… who are you?

GAMBIT's avatar

Yes I grew up with four pro athletes and one guitar player for a famous music group. Since I keep a low profile on fluther I can not say their names. I also met Pope John Paul when I was younger.

Emdean1's avatar

I am distantly related to Edgar Allen Poe…..Thats what my hippy grandmother tells me!

elmagico's avatar

Wouldn’t say they’re my friends or that they are really “famous” but some people I went to class with pop up in the society pages every now and then. One girl is a fashion designer and one guy dates a TV moderator.

One funny thing was that one guy’s mom, (he was one of my best friends back in school) has a daily column in the countries biggest newspaper. I always enjoy(ed) her writings about how to appreciate life and how to uphold family values because there was such a stark contrast to her as a person in real life. At home she’d lie on the couch smoking, not giving a sh*t, in a messy house with pets and kids running amok literally, while she preached virtues and the good life in her columns.

vanslonski's avatar

Well, shit me. H.S.Thompson revived, but, Eric Clapton, after his stint at Hazelton treatment center, gave me a Gold record.
But, hey fluther dudes, everybody is famous. Just because your not “OUT THERE” does not mean you are less. F**k the world!!
You are MY Song. snippets of consciousness. A lick in my strings!! OHH, baby Did I reach you? Ya sure, who am I?

I have a friend who was Eddie Money’s keyboard player for many years. Does that count?

Allie's avatar

She’s not exactly a friend, but Anna Faris is my professor’s little sister.

gailcalled's avatar

@AlenaD: That’s your idea of a casual meal?. For me there’s a week’s worth of cooking and shopping right there. And, dare I ask, what is head cheese? And no dessert?

vanslonski's avatar

I porked Winona Ryder. But, who hasn’t?
BeefCake in beautiful Minnesota.
Wow, one Pollock to another,
Hey if U fluther dudes flag me on this, I’ll
have Winona in hand in Your faces, just to make it Real.
Let’s rock!!
Your keyboard or mine?

Jack79's avatar

Sorry to disappoint you sparkle, I’m not that famous. I bet nobody here will have heard of me, even if I tell you my real name. Plus I don’t sing professionally anymore.

Allie's avatar

My mother works with a woman who was (a) married to Steve Wozniak and (b) is friends with both Steve’s (Wozniak and Jobs).

@ – Alena D – How cool, that guy seems neat!!!

@ – Gambit – The Pope ?! That would be something!!!

I used to live near and trick or treat at Bart Star’s house. He gave out little chocolate footballs.

And I got my ass kicked in a golf chipping contest by Ray Nitzchkie. His shot went in. My shot, fueled by the adrineline of meeting him, went over the target, off the bathroom roof and into the fire barrel they were roasting corn on. He said “what do you want to do when you go to college?” After I told him he said “Good, golfing isn’t your strong point” and laughed and patted me on the back. I almost fell down. He was SO pleasant and cool He was supposed to stay for 45 min. and spent 3 hours. When he shook my hand it was like when you hold a baby’s hand in yours. His hands were HUGE!!!!

MissAnthrope's avatar

@gailcalled – Well, for that class of chef, the meal was practically thrown together. The environment was very casual, as if we were simply joining them for the lunch they were going to eat anyway, not like they went out of their way to cook for us. Head cheese is terrine of meat from the edible parts of the head of a calf or pig (sometimes a sheep or cow). I couldn’t bring myself to eat it.

@Bri_L – It was really an amazing experience, kind of seems like a dream, really. He’s a very nice guy.

Bri_L's avatar

@AlenaD – he is my favorite chef to watch on tv. Very unassuming. I loved it when he and Julia Chiles were on together.

I don’t know how “famous” you’d consider him, but Brian Patrick Clark is a very close friend of my brother’s. He named his son, Kerry Ryan after my brother. I was the one who answered the phone after he moved away to California and called to tell us the news about his first big commercial break…. Stay Free Mini pads, ha ha!!

Before that, he worked at the steel mill with my brother. When my youngest brother became paralyzed, Brian was playing Grant Putnam on Genreal Hospital. He and 2 of the other actors from the show came to Cleveland and did a benefit for him and raised enough money for his first electric wheelchair, bells and whistles included.

Oh yeah, and in ‘77 I smoked out with Dennis and Ray at the Keg and Quarter Hotel in Cleveland.

Bri_L's avatar

@scamp – I totally recognize him! WOW has he had a long career!

Sparkie510's avatar

@jack79 – Go on… Give us a clue – I’m sure you won’t disappoint!

My brother is a musician so we get to know a lot of the folks in the Texas music world, some of whom are known nationally and internationally.

My dad was a honcho in a very large company and so we ended up meeting and sometimes becoming friends with various movers and shakers on Wall Street and in Washington D.C. as well as in South America and Europe.

I grew up partly in a town near New York City that had a lot of entertainers living in it as well as folks in the advertising world, so we knew folks such as The Marlboro Man (he did storm windows when he wasn’t doing commercials) and the original TV Mr. Clean, as well as the kids of various famous people.

I am also involved in theater and film here in my little hometown, and have known a number of folks who have gone on to LA and New York.

On the whole, however, I find it much more useful to be an unknown. Nobody tries to take your picture when you run out to Walgreen’s in the middle of the night for emergency toilet paper, and strangers don’t interrupt you when you are eating in restaurants.

@Darwin – Yeah but your a cute wrinkle dog. What kinda chance do you have!

THE PEPSI GIRL GOES TO MY HIGHSCHOOL AND IS DATING ONE OF MY GOOD FRIENDS

thats it.

Jayne's avatar

Well, I’m a senior in high school, so none of my friends are there yet, but I have the privilege of knowing some truly brilliant people, who will without a doubt make names for themselves in their chosen fields, if not in the world at large.

scamp's avatar

@Bri_L you remember him? Cool!! I think he got his first commercial around 73 or so. He and my brother double dated for their prom. I remember thinking he was so handsome when he came over in his tux before they went to pick up their dates.

gailcalled's avatar

I am friends with breedmitch whose new wine bar (Brook-vin) got boffo reviews from the New York papers and critics;

I am friends with PupnTaco who just submitted a knock-em-dead parody of the Feb.14th cover Eustace Tilley) of the New Yorker;

I am friends with Harp who can not only make a harp but then cover it in chocolate.

I am friends with cwilbur who does not have to cheat when he writes quips either in Latin or classical Greek.

scamp's avatar

I’m friends with poofandmook, who knows how to make me laugh when I am having a bad day, and has shown me the true meaning of the word loyalty.

poofandmook's avatar

I’m friends with scamp who isn’t the least bit pretentious and is always genuine
