Speaking of birthdays, What is your favorite kind of birthday cake?

Asked by KrystaElyse (3601points) February 6th, 2009

I need to bake a cake for a my friend’s birthday but she is very indecisive. Any suggestions on some awesome cake flavors/recipes? (other than the standard yellow or chocolate cake)

Chocolate Peanut Butter.

Carvel with the chocolate topping.

Dense, moist chocolate cake. My favorite? Ina Garten’s.

(I think the coffee in the icing, I added extra, makes it a standout even among chocolate cakes.)

I’m not a fan of cake. I’d rather have a quality cheesecake with strawberries on it. If I had to pick a cake, then I’d pick a lemon cake with lemon frosting. It’s the lemon frosting that really does it for me. Mmmm.. =]

They all sound really good!

My mother makes black forest cake with whipped cream, cherries, and the kirschwassen. It’s amazing, but a little time consuming.

KrystaElyse's avatar

@zephyr826 – What is kirschwassen? Black forest cake is delicious!

cwilbur's avatar

I have a hard time complaining about the standard chocolate cake, myself.

(Of course, my concept of “standard” is a very good chocolate cake.)

Kirschwassen is sort of like a cherry brandy, but it’s not sweet. it adds a depth to the cake.

Ahh, gotcha!

Strawberry shortcake.

Or chocolate cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting.

One year I got this for my birthday from work. It was almost too pretty to eat, but we managed!

KrystaElyse's avatar

@aprilsimnel – I luuurve strawberry shortcake. That cake is beautiful! I wish I could make something like that.

@KrystaElyseCupcake Cafe in Manhattan. They hold classes on how to create their floral designs. And that’s a buttercream frosting on their cakes; it’s almost too rich. Maybe you could email them and get them to open a store in your town!

KrystaElyse's avatar

Mmmmmm! I will look them up! Thank you!! :o)

blondie411's avatar

@aprilsimnel ugh! i was just going to suggest that! we’ve been on the same wavelength recently!!

PS, cupcake cafe is wayyyy better than Magnolia IMO, just because Sex and the City says to go there doesn’t mean you have to…

Give me ‘torta de tres leches’ anyday.

KrystaElyse's avatar

Tres leches cake is SO good! Häagen-Dazs even came out with a tres leches ice cream that was AMAZING.

blondie411's avatar

apple pie ice cream is also amazing, think it is gross, try it you’ll be hooked

KrystaElyse's avatar

Oh my. Apple pie ice cream? I gotta have it!

blondie411's avatar

You have to find it first, I swear I had it only found it from a publix in Atlanta and have never found it anywhere else. It is like my white whale!

KrystaElyse's avatar

Hahaha. I’ll have to search the publix supermarkets down here! If I find some i’ll share :D

blondie411's avatar

I promise you will not be sad!! It is like a party in your mouth!! I mean it is like apple pie and ice cream all rolled into one!!!

My personal favorite is a great coconut cake.

Another cake I love (It’s a bit labor intensive, but great, is the Spice cake in Silver Palate.).

bythebay's avatar

what does it mean when somebody sends you a cake… Nevermind!

AstroChuck's avatar

Any cake with a girl inside.
If I can’t have that then I’ll take either a Devil’s food or an Angel food cake.
That appeals to both sides of me.

marinelife's avatar

@AstroChuck Yeah, but someone always gets the girl stuck in their teeth.

AstroChuck's avatar

And that’s a bad thing because..?

Dorkgirl's avatar

Yellow cake with chocolate frosting. A classic.

marinelife's avatar

@Dorkgirl I agree. I was sorry the questioner had ruled it out.

Dorkgirl's avatar

@marina- that’s what I get for not reading the whole question…D’oh.

KrystaElyse's avatar

@Marina – I only ruled it out because I wanted to try some different flavors. I’m definitely a fan of yellow and chocolate though!

marinelife's avatar

@Dorkgirl Didn’t mean it that way. What you got from me was lurve.

@KrystaElyse That makes sense. For me, it is like this. Cake: Good. Any Kind of Cake: Good.

Spice or carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Yum.

jca's avatar

strawberry shortcake with banana cake, real whipped cream, real strawberries on top and between the layers, (defrosted) frozen strawberries with the juice soaking into the cake. tastes better the next day when the bottom layer is like a sponge and has soaked up that juice.

veneziana's avatar

Marble pistachio cake. It is very easy to make. You buy a marble cake mix and prepare as directed. Add I box of instant pistachio pudding to the vanilla part.

Dorkgirl's avatar

@marina—no offense taken. I’m sticking with “D’oh”.

EmpressPixie's avatar

@Dorkgirl: Psh. I stuck with chocolate cake because I had a particularly good chocolate cake recipe to send along. I think carefully ignoring things like “ruling out” is important.

When I was a kid, about 5 years old, my mom asked what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday. According to my mom, I asked for chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. She asked what color roses I wanted on it and I aske for chocolate roses. It’s been a running joke and a source of shared joy between my mom and I for many years to get me chocolate cakes with chocolate frosting and chocolate roses.
I guess I knew what I wanted! :)
