I’m getting bumgenius diapers, but I have no clue how much waste a newborn can make. How many diapers would you recommend?

Take the number you think you need and multiply it by three.
One should do the trick, I think.
Really though, expect at least two units of waste per unit volume of baby per day.
I started my first daughter with cloth diapers too. I’m all for saving the planet and all but that didn’t last long. Luck to you with this.
I agree with Blondsjon, except I’d multiply it by eight.
This site has some good information to help you calculate it:
“How Many Cloth Diapers Needed for Full Time
Most cloth diaper experts agree that the preferred number of cloth diapers in a full-time stash is 18 – 20 diapers and 5 – 6 covers. These numbers will vary a little depending on your child’s age and how often you plan to wash.”
We are using disposable diapers, and are doing laundry at least on a daily basis (I never thought I would use the phrase “poop explosion” in my daily lexicon, but, here I am…) Frankly, I can’t imagine what would happen having to wash dirty diapers every day too. Uggghh.
I still remember the diaper pail from when my sister was a baby. I believe my mother had 24 cloth diapers (including a couple that were navy blue with big white spots) and 6 covers. She did a load of wash just about every day except when it was raining (she didn’t get a drier until my sister was almost 2 years old).
I also still recall the rich neighbors down the street who used a diaper service. Every few days a truck would come by to get the dirties and deliver a stack of clean ones.
When my kids were babies we typically went through about 8 diapers a day (we used disposable because of my memories of the diaper pail).
I discovered that the number of diapers in a package comes really close to the number you will use in a week. There are 44? in a newborn package, and that’s about what you use. They use less per week as they age, because they poop and pee with less frequency.
Respectfully and in all seriousness, I recommend getting zero cloth diapers. Parenthood is hard enough without all the extra laundry and scraping poop explosions into the toilet.
I would suggest a million disposable diapers and one cloth diaper to use to dust the furniture. Cloth is good, but way too much work. We used cloth years and years ago and it was a nightmare. Even a diaper service was a lot of trouble. If any of the soiled diapers or liquid soaking material in the diaper pail spilled on the floor, it stained the surface with NO WAY to remove the stain (or smell).
Please, curb the discouraging words.I am getting cloth. That’s that.
Keep the answers focused on how many are needed.
Those of you who answered that question specifically, thanks!
Sorry to add more discouraging words but we started on cloth nappies too, full of good intentions, but gave up quite quickly. We still have 80% of them unused in a drawer.
You people are not me and my hubby. We don’t give up.
