I’m just wondering what websites people subscribe for and why. Are the free alternatives worse? Do you like helping out a small website?
I subscribe to Ars Technica since I’m a faithful reader there, I was wondering if anything does something similar. (Understandable if you don’t wish to share)

I’m talking about money here though; which websites to people pay a fee to get into or access to. I imagine that some flutherers have things worth subscribing for.
The only site I subscribe to is FreelanceSwitch. At the moment I’m reconsidering even that because I’ve gotten stiffed before and their TOS is powerless to do anything about it.
I’m under the impression that it’s a fairly small site; there are certainly far larger ones (the company I work for has accounts with much bigger ones for instance), and in a way that’s preferable. Fewer people competing. I think they choose their material well and the articles they post are very helpful.
I gave my $5 to MetaFilter some time ago. I like it there and I visit every day. I’ve been able to get a lot of feedback there that has been extremely helpful for certain questions. And a listing over there brought me here, so there you go.
Service-y, as Gawker likes to say.
