Do you still hide it from them? Or at a certain age did they throw you a lighter?

I’m 28. I smoke in front of my mom on occasion, as she is also a smoker. I still get grief from her about it though. My health-nut dad knows I smoke, and is very vocal about how terrible it is. I don’t smoke in front of him. It’s pretty much a matter of respect in that situation. I know it really bothers him, why would I do it right in front of him?
I don’t smoke in front of my parents. Even thought they both used to smoke cigarettes and weed, now they’re all into Catholicism and repressing themselves as human beings.
It was never acceptable. It was about the worst evil I could have done. I was about 25 the first time I smoked in front of my mother and 35 before I lit up in my father’s presence.
I quit nearly 20 years ago, though.
My sons smoke around me. They don’t hide it or sneak. But they do stay out of my face with it. With me, though, it’s not a religious thing as it was with my parents. It’s all just about their health. Their father’s lung cancer was more of a message than any words I could say.
I was ten when my dad was killed. I was twenty four when my mom got out of jail. I didn’t care since they weren’t around.
Never, they got me a nice engraved Zippo for my 20th birthday, but I still never lit up in front of them. My Dad and I both quit about five years later when my daughter came home from school crying that she did not want us to die (they discussed the hazards of smoking that day).
It’s a respect issue I refrain from behavior that upsets them.
I was raised in Germany and my whole family smoked, over there, the legal age for smoking is 16, so you see a lot of 14 and 15 year olds around puffing away.
My aunt who is 75 still won’t smoke in front of her mother (my grandmother) who is 96. (psst, grandma knows).
I think I was 14.I remember my father was none to happy about it. My parents were divorced. My poor Dad was trying to raise two girls on his own and I was no picnic. LOL! My Dad credits me with all of his grey hair. :-) I finally quit about two years ago.
I smoked in front of my dad when I was 19 or so. He had been a heavy smoker who quit, but I never really felt like it was anything to smoke in front of him. I smoked on and off for a long while, I’m mostly done now, I never really bought the notion that I was a “kid” when my dad was around. I’ve felt more awkward smoking in front of co-workers who didn’t realize I smoked.
1976 when I was in 8th grade we went to Bermuda and everyone else was doing it so I felt comfortable in front of my parents…and they didn’t object.
My mom caught me smoking at 13 years old. Being the stellar mother she was ~ she let me smoke in front of her from then on.
16, and my mom always comes to me when she needs a lighter (just for candles or BBQ stuff).
I’m 53 and I’ve never smoked in front of my mother.
(I no longer smoke. I vape now using a personal vaporizer.)
Besides the fact that my mom doesn’t smoke, it never seemed the appropriate thing to do.
