Should my resignation have been acknowledged?

Asked by SuperMouse (30853points) February 7th, 2009

Last week I resigned a position I held in our campus’ student government. It was a position I cared deeply about, but life events kept me from giving it my all. I submitted my resignation via email last week – to the faculty member in charge of student government and the student government leader – and have heard nothing in return. I’m bummed that no one has even bothered to respond. Am I out of line?

Hum, on top of my head I’d say a resignation is not “effective” until it has been formally accepted. So you should perform your function until it has indeed been confirmed.

But then, I’ve been out of school for ages and was in the military, so my “definitions” might be off a bit.

Go with your gut feeling, if you feel there is a need for confirmation, then go for it. Makes you look better too, if you see it through instead of “e-mail -> gone”

I really think it is appropriate to resign in front of the board. An email resignation just doesn’t cut it.

@Supermouse: I’m sorry you had to leave a position you cared about; I’m sure that was a hard decision for you. Perhaps they have a policy of responding in writing? If that’s the case it could take a couple of days for the letter to be written, etc.

@Supermouse – I’m wondering if it was because you submitted it via email. There is a certain formality about a resignation that is usually not done, via email. Sueanne Tremendous might be onto something in her statement.

Also true is _bythebay’s response. It could be that they just haven’t had time to send a letter.

Either way, I would seriously consider turning in a written resignation, in person.

Sometimes a resignation from a position in a group must be brought up before that group and the acceptance be voted on. What I would do is if you don’t hear after the next meeting is drop a note to the faculty advisor and ask if s/he received your email. At least then you should get a response.
