I have an HP pavilion dv8300 cto and I just formatted my hard drive and reinstalled XP. I had a couple issues with drivers i had to track down and install myself which wasnt too much of an issue. Problem is, my audio still isnt working. I went to HPs site and downloaded both audio drivers.
“Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp32646) ” installs without a problem, but “Conexant High Definition Audio Driver ” installs but during the initializing stage it fails and says “Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver.”
I also tried going to the device manager and saw there was one item that was an unidentified PCI Device (which i would assume to be the sound card) so i uninstalled that and tried rebooting the comp. But that was to no avail as well.
I think its also important to note that my laptop has some quick buttons above the keyboard for starting a DVD and also for lowering raising and muting the sound. Those buttons dont work either, now i dont know if they dont work because theres just “no sound card” or if they are part of the problem. I tried installing the drivers for them as well, it said it worked, but unno.
I dont really know if this matters or not, but the speaker bar on the laptop is made by altec lansing. I tried looking on their site for a driver there as well, but i have no way of figuring out which model i have so thats kind of a dead end.
I also tried calling HP to ask if they could tell me what the problem could be but they said i had to pay 50 dollars to talk to a tech since its out of warranty even if was going to fix it all myself, so obviously that option is out.

Did you use the disks that came with the laptop when you bought it?
I am thinking in terms of trouble shooting if it is a hardware issue that by using those disks it might help as they were sent with the computers function in mind.
@Bri_L i wish it was that simple. This isnt even really my laptop. I borrowed it from a friend almost two years ago while he was going to fix my desktop. Then we kinda stopped talking sooo i have no way of getting to the disks if they even existed in the first place -_ -
Well, I am not as much a pc man as a mac guy so I really need to be at the machine. There are far more capable people here. I don’t know why they haven’t offered to help.
One thing is to confirm the sound card you have and go to the manufacturer’s site for the drivers. That might help.
Another thing might be to let windows install a generic driver and see if that works.
Go to your media settings control panel and make sure your listening for sound where the computer is sending it. i.e. is it only sending it to the ear phones, is it muted for some reason etc.
That’s just me brainstorming.
“I don’t know why they haven’t offered to help.” probably cause i only asked 47 minutes ago :P
“confirm the sound card you have and go to the manufacturer’s site for the drivers.” problem is i dont know how to go about doing this lol
“Go to your media settings control panel and make sure your listening for sound where the computer is sending it.”
its sending it no where because it says i have no sound card lol.
i hate technology sometimes….
common, techies can’t wait to jump on these questions, especially when hacks like me are trying to help. They are probably lingering back there laughing at me.
Go to START>RUN then type devmgmt.msc
then go down to the audio settings. you dan look there to see what is installed
I have a similar HP dv series. Did yours come with XP or Vista? Did you burn the restore discs when you first got the laptop? If you don’t have the restore discs try to identify the sound card and you should be able to download the drivers from the sound card site or maybe use Microsoft repair and update drivers.
Like i said, its not that simple. This isnt my laptop, i borrowed it from a friend and we no longer speak so theres no way of having restore disks or anything like that. I also dont know how to go about tracking down the sound card in there. btw i came from ubuntu to xp.
did you try this.
Go to START>RUN then type devmgmt.msc
then go down to the audio settings.
It should give you the info.
Go to the control panel in XP and look for sound devices and go from there.
@Bri_L devmgmt.msc is the device manager
“I also tried going to the device manager and saw there was one item that was an unidentified PCI Device (which i would assume to be the sound card) so i uninstalled that and tried rebooting the comp. But that was to no avail as well.”
@steve6 like i said, theres nothing showing up in sound devices because windows isnt even recognizing it. (^the unknown PCI device mentioned above) sooo theres no way to figure it out.
I know that is the device manager. When I go there there is a specific multimedia audio selection.
Sorry, I don’t mean to frustrate you. I wish I could help
When you formatted the hard drive did you format the partition with all the critical stuff on it?
@Bri_L not frustrating, i know your just trying to help :) But like i was trying to explain, in the audio section there is nothing. But in the unknown section there is a PCI device(which is the sound card).
@steve6 yup complete format.
Try this:
start>run> type MSCONFIG
then in the first panel change the selection from “Normal” to the second option and see if that helps.
@Bri_L i just tried, no dice. :( . The installer wouldnt complete, and device manager wouldnt even come up in this mode.
You lost some good stuff if you formatted the partition. Call the Geek Squad.
well actually come to think of it, i installed windows on my E drive not my C. Ubuntu is no longer installed though.
Damn…. i guess my knight in shining armor isnt going to come riding along to fix my comp :(
