Any suggestions on a wine gift?

Asked by syz (36034points) February 9th, 2009

I’m looking for a gift box of a couple bottles of wine for someone who is just learning about and getting into wine, for somewhere around $50.00. A prepackaged gift that I can ship directly would be much preferable to picking out individual bottles and having to arrange for shipment. Any favorites?

I know this isn’t exactly what your asking, but if your budding wine connoisseur hasn’t ever toured a winery, that would make an excellent addition to your gift package (and probably wouldn’t cost anything). I’d maybe look for wineries in that person’s area, call or research a few to see if they’ve won any awards recently (a sign that their wine is decent) and work with them to put together a package that includes wine, a tour, and a guided tasting.

If the area isn’t a strong wine producing area, there still might be a tasting room, but otherwise, I’d just go with your original idea.

Just speaking from experience, it adds a lot to learn about how it’s made.

how about a wine of the month club.

I looked at monthly clubs, but they’re pretty expensive. And it is a great idea, kevbo, but he lives in the Grand Canyon.

I love the Ridge wines. Maybe give them a call and see what they can arrange in terms of gift baskets?

The best winery in Danville Ky. The cabernet and the cranberry are two of the best wines I have ever tasted. Shouldn’t be hard to find on the net. If they claim the cranberry is award-winning then you have the right place.

The early part of this week’s wine.woot.com may be close to what you have in mind. The deal is only available until Wed at midnight (or whenever they sell out). It is five bottles of red wine for $45 after shipping. The reds are all different blends/varieties from one label. Read the comments to learn more.

Just to update: the button is bouncing over at wine.woot, which means they have less than 10% of their stock left on this offer.
