Where can I get a small, inexpensive, high quality loom?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) February 10th, 2009

I have a child who is really into weaving. We’re trying to find a loom, preferably a small one that doesn’t take up half the room, and preferably under $100 that might be simple enough, yet long-lastin enough to feed this itch. I shall, of course, be doing my own research, but if any of you can give me a head start, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Do you mean like a lap-loom or like a mega-loom-of-death-for-making-large-weavings?

lap loom sounds more like it

You can get cheap laplooms fairly easily. I had this one as a kid. It’s good for learning how freaking delicate weaving is. You really have to be careful not to warp your weaving with it. If she’s already a weaver, you can do something fancier like this.

The obvious downside of the first one is the difficulty in creating a weaving longer than the loom itself, something the second addresses better. The first is also more likely to give into warp, but that teaches it’s own lesson about being careful and paying attention.

Still need a loom? I have three Hazel Rose looms and am very pleased with them.

Well, it’s not clear. At the moment he is very interested in drawing dragons (or learning to draw them), and the loom seems to have gone on the back burner. He loves things that keep his hands busy, I think. So some day, I think we’ll hear about it some more.
