Can it be done? The whole view of the Atlantic from your library, work your own hours kind of thing.

Grant writers make a pretty decent living if they’re really good at it. And I’m pretty sure they can work their own hours, or at least work up to that.
Most writers start out writing in their spare time, and then a few lucky ones get published. A few of those make enough to live on, and some even fewer, get rich. It’s worth a shot, but I’d had a good “Plan B” at the ready.
I’d sure love to find out someday.
I have several friends that are writers , all of them have day jobs, but I’m pretty sure at least one of them will be published at some point. Whether or not they will make a living on it or get rich is another matter. But I could definitely see some of them teaching at a university level in the future.
I firmly believe that if you really want something bad you can do it, go get it and make money out of it… read The Success Principles This is an amazing book, which will transform the way you think about your dreams and gives you excellent advice in terms getting from where you are now…to there…
It can be done. But not by many. And you’d have to be good at knowing how to write what sells and not just knowing how to write.
@Jeruba – Please let down your hair again, Cate. You look a little too formal in this picture.
